Ormskirk: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Ormskirk and the rest of Lancashire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still in your tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in. One call our way will be plenty: we will explain what follows after this. Try that straight away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start it. And having started, do not depend on it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Don't tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it just leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Burscough Street? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A difficult spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • Before you call, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts L39 2 — that is what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, about how many litres, and if the car has started. These three replies determine the whole visit.

Quarter past eight, a quick top-up on the road in, and it dawns on you close to eleven — by which time your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been left outside the nearest station for three hours. Phone then leave it precisely where it sits. The journey in is the thing that is key most, as diesel performs two jobs on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were done with your pump running on a fuel that had lost much of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing our technicians ask is how far you drove, not how long your car has been standing.

Diesel Renault Clio. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Aldi. That is the enquiry our technicians like, since the point beneath it's about volume through the pump not hours on the clock.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Ormskirk Church of England Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Switch your hazards on, leave your ignition alone, then call us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is supplied to demand, and a drive taken in a rush asks for a great deal of it.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Dacia Duster left close to Ormskirk Library barely two streets on. Call us, and leave it off. A short distance does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning the lines instead of only emptying the tank.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle lumpy, and the diesel Vauxhall Astra is parked up near Emmanuel Methodist United Reformed Church. The engine isn't giving up — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours generally get driven again before anyone picks up the phone. Don't. Off, then call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Ormskirk

Draining petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Most of the job begins at a forecourt, which means a fair chunk of it is finished on site. If you're still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's typically where this drain gets done — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement.

No place except a garage can it be stopped with the motor still unstarted. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

The attendants will usually help you roll the vehicle out from the pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Ormskirk plus the towns next to it

Aughton Park, Scarth Hill, Westhead, Town Green, Hurlston — each of those on our trips that bring us across to Ormskirk too, a town.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and nearly all towns around Lancashire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. On the border, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Phone and ask rather than presuming.

The area this page spans is on the map. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers serve, and none of that asks the car to come to us.

Ormskirk: broken down wherever you stopped

Some drivers find no sensible place to stop at all. Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge on Derby Street West, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Okay there? Stay by it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it. Never restart the motor to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into your fuel system. We'll send our van to a tricky spot without any bother, and for your car that's far better than pressing on.

Driven it already? Stop, and see below

under 3 miles from Ormskirk, the M58 is what counts now. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that is sensible, pull up there, and never start it to reposition. Long drive? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in the van.

Ormskirk itself

Ormskirk is a town in Lancashire, situated inland in the North West of England, approximately 11.7 miles from Liverpool. Ormskirk sits at an elevation of around 55 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Aughton Park and Scarth Hill. Ormskirk has a population of around 18,919 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Ormskirk is located about 183.6 miles from London, making it a significant settlement in the region.

When we arrive with you around Ormskirk: what happens

  • We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
  • We clear the tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The motor is turned on and tested to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Ormskirk AdBlue removal is a separate job

The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Ormskirk page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Ormskirk?

We can't put one price on this page honestly, as this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. If it is not pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Ormskirk

Fuel drains on a Ormskirk petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. We work at Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. What settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more often than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Standing next to it?

That engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Lancashire and around Ormskirk: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
