Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ostend: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch the engine on, even briefly, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave it off. Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is generally a drain and a flush, done right where your vehicle stands, and what you do in the coming few minutes decides that far more than anything else. Below is the order from here, anywhere around Ostend you are.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

Go through these in order, before you do anything else.

  • Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, your ignition can prime the system — and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank towards the components it harms.
  • A fuller tank of the same mix is all adding diesel leaves you, since it removes nothing. So no more diesel.
  • Being seen comes first beside moving traffic: put your hazards on, and only then deal with anything else.
  • Off the petrol pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle clear of the pump. Do not crank it to shift it, however short the distance.
  • Keep the receipt. It shows which fuel went in and about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M2 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 25 miles from Ostend, and stop somewhere sensible instead of pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

Ostend fuel drain: has the engine run yet, or not?

Everything after this point rests on one answer.

Motor not run at all?

  • The petrol remains in your tank, and only there.
  • Normally it is emptied and flushed right where your car stands.
  • Being here is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of stage one.

Run at all, however briefly:

  • The lines and the filter now hold petrol pulled out of that tank.
  • On a longer run it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors.
  • The job grows with the mileage — lines flushed, filter dealt with, sometimes more.

That line falls there because diesel protects your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. A tank of petrol, left alone, damages nothing. Once it is pumped, petrol starts wearing whatever moves it.

Ostend, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A van that circles versus a van that finds you: a little preparation is the difference.

  • Your location: a postcode starting CM0 8 works best.
  • A road name helps: Maldon Road, say, or whichever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside East of England CO-OP, for example — and it is far easier to find.
  • The car. Make, model, plus that it is a diesel.
  • Which went in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Ostend has a page for it. So tell us.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on the receipt — whichever gives us how much.
  • If it's run, how far plus how hard — and whether it's run at all.
  • The owner may have to approve the work under some hire and company agreements — which is why it's faster to settle whose motor it is before our technicians arrive.

The wait for a Ostend fuel drain, and what to do in it

The wait is where well-intended help does the damage. Hold to these.

  • Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of your car.
  • Nobody — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift the vehicle a short way.
  • Anything from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is risky — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond your tank. Don't drain the vehicle yourself.
  • Not for the radio, not for your windows: the ignition remains off.

Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

  • Fuel, volume, whether it's run: those answers set this job, and that is why we give a quote after them instead of before.
  • Out of your tank comes the tainted mixture: that tank is cleared.
  • Purging the fuel lines follows, since a car that ran has petrol past that tank, in the fuel lines themselves.
  • Where the vehicle has a workable filter, it is replaced; if not, cleared.
  • Priming comes after fresh diesel is in.
  • The first start on fresh diesel. Once priming is complete, the engine is started and we make sure that it runs smoothly.

Only when it is running on fresh diesel do our engineers go. Your car goes back to normal driving right away, and lasting damage is very uncommon if it has been noticed soon.

After the fuel drain is done: driving around Ostend once more

  • Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do once it has been started on fresh fuel.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your cue to stop then ring us once more.
  • Keep your paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
