Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Over End?

Never fire up the engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not run, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, across Over End and the rest of Derbyshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Contact us before anything else starts, so you will hear what happens next.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And having started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — that injection pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be too: switching it on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Eaton Hill, anywhere — a tricky place for us beats a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a motor that never moved.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting DE45 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what was put in, about how much, and if your car has been turned over. The answers shape all that happens next.

On a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Pumps are where this job usually kicks off, and where a good portion of it ends. If you're still on the forecourt at BP, that's usually where the drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement.

No place other than a garage can this be stopped with the engine still cold. We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the offer. Starting the car just to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Over End

Petrol in your Volkswagen Tiguan, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside Co-op Food, somewhere around Over End? Then phone, and leave your engine out of that — not even to get out of the bay. Someone comes to you. Tank drained, fuel lines flushed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile pulls hardly anything, and so these tend to be the straightforward ones.

It will fire up. It will pull away quite happily. That is the problem, as a diesel on a diluted tank behaves generally while wearing down the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, never risk the drive home from Prince Of Wales — leave the Nissan Qashqai and phone.

Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Yeld Wood, it is doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive it home to buy yourself any.

Why we're blunt about not driving on: the pump waits upstream of the injectors, and so whatever a worn pump gives off travels onward with the fuel. Leave the Audi A3 near Baslow Village Hall and ring us.

Most of these happen somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical instead of careless — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Vauxhall Astra, a fill-up by St Anne's Church that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the injectors.

Service near Over End

Those same journeys take us to Bridge End, Nether End, Baslow, West End and Bubnell along with Over End, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations across Derbyshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Close to a border, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Call us and check instead of presuming.

Look at this map for the patch covered here. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the car doesn't need to move to us.

Stuck at the roadside anywhere around Over End?

A chance to pull over anywhere suitable does not come to everybody. A routine call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge on School Lane or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Sit with the car if it is safe to be inside, and clear of it when it's not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere handier and that mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. Pressing on does the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult place, and that is no bother for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has rolled

under 15 miles out of Over End, your M1 is what matters now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next exit that's sensible, pull up there, and never start it to move it. It changes what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.

Where's Over End?

Over End is a suburban area in Derbyshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 138 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Over End lies near several other small communities, including Bridge End, Nether End, and Baslow, and is approximately 11 miles from the city of Sheffield. Over End is also relatively close to the Peak District National Park, which offers scenic views and outdoor recreational activities. Over End has a population of around 1172 residents.

What our engineers do when our technicians arrive with you around Over End

  • The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and whether your motor has run.
  • Away flows the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the issue.
  • Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • The motor is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Over End AdBlue removal is a different job

The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — never crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal in Over End has its own page with the details — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Over End?

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page honestly, as this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Over End drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Over End. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like The Co-operative is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. What determines how much work is required is if that mix has been sucked through the fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more frequently than drivers fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep the car shut off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.
