Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Over Leigh?

If you have not started your engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still inside that tank and your engine has not run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has stopped in Over Leigh or the rest of Derbyshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Ring us and then we shall show you what happens next before you try much else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • As you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. That is why you never start the vehicle, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave the ignition be too. Diesel has two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, which pulls this petrol out of that tank and into just those parts.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and our team would much rather get to an awkward location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Eccles Road, turn your hazards on and leave it there.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SK23 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, approximately how much, and whether your car has fired. These three answers determine the entire call-out.

The drive back would roughly double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf. So keep it where it is. Phone us from the platform if that's easier — no one needs you hovering over your car at Whaley Bridge while we get it done, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

Our technicians will get to you, empty that tank, purge those fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into the diesel Renault Megane around Over Leigh and you are stranded outside The Co-operative Food with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us — and don't fire it up once more to leave the space. A mile or so at gentle throttle pulls little fuel, so these are usually the straightforward jobs.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the precision components that are supposed to build that pressure, so the further a diesel Peugeot 308 travelled, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the drive to Memorial Park went, then, and the tank is where to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off then phone us.

Strange spots are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical rather than careless: the slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Filled up close to Good News Church without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes C-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody spots it, and miles is what decides how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the blend is in your filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Audi A3 that made it close to Whaley Bridge Cricket Club needs the system flushed, not cleared.

Draining petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

A fair share of this job is completed at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly kicks off. Still at Tesco? Then that is usually where it gets done. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the station.

At the forecourt, the mistake is spotted with the engine never run, and no place else manages it. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers put it right where the car sits. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Staff will generally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the offer. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Parts our team cover in Over Leigh

These same trips bring us to Horwich End, New Horwich, Dowry, Whaley Bridge and Taxal along with Over Leigh, which is a residential suburb.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and the majority of places around Derbyshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Assuming is the habit to resist, above all on the border or somewhere your satnav struggles. Call us and ask.

That map shows the area the page covers. The vehicle does not need to move to us. Our technicians work throughout every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down on the kerbside near Over Leigh

A chance to pull over somewhere safe does not come to everybody. A routine call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, finished up on the verge on Walters Wood or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Out of the motor when it isn't wise to wait inside, beside it when it is. Don't start up your motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that blend further into the fuel system. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than a technician driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no problem for us.

Run it already? Stop, and see below

The local M60 is the road which matters here, and it runs under 10 miles from Over Leigh. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are normally a loss of power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Never restart it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit and switch off. Suppose the worst of it on a long drive. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring differs.

What comes next when our technicians reach you around Over Leigh

  • The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • That tank is emptied of everything.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what created the trouble, so the fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleared.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Over Leigh AdBlue removal is a separate problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — while this issue beneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Over Leigh page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Over Leigh?

Truthfully, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank can hold.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Over Leigh

Fuel drains on a Over Leigh petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work happens. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave it off. Driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more often than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is your car still with you?

Don't turn the car on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it stay that way. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
