Petrol in a Diesel Car in Over Wallop: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, don't switch the motor on, even briefly, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave the car off. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever the vehicle has stopped — and no other factor settles that more than these next few minutes do. From here on, in order, wherever you are in Over Wallop:

Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Work through these in sequence, before you do anything else.

  • Take your keys out. Even the ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of your tank to precisely the parts it harms, and so leave the vehicle alone completely.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it only leaves you with more of the same blend.
  • Near moving traffic? Then the hazards come on before anything else, and so the vehicle is simple to spot.
  • The attendants will normally help you push it away from the petrol pump. Let them, then move it by hand — never under the motor, even for a couple of yards.
  • Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers that, and that's where our questions start. Do not bin it.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M3 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 15 miles from Over Wallop, and pull over somewhere safe and not pressing on to the services. Then start at step one.

Every Over Wallop fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

If your engine hasn't run at all:

  • Only that tank has petrol in it so far.
  • Where the vehicle stands is normally where the work happens: a drain, then a flush.
  • Being here is the best case — which is the whole point of stage one.

Engine run, even briefly?

  • Out of the tank, past the fuel filter, into the lines: that's how far that petrol has got.
  • Run it farther and the petrol reaches the injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.
  • The farther it went, the bigger the job — your lines, the filter, and now and then more besides.

That line falls there because diesel protects your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not. Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing. Pump that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Over Wallop

A little preparation is the difference between a van that finds you and a van that circles.

  • SO20 8 plus the rest of the postcode is the ideal way to begin telling us where you are.
  • Give the road — Station Road or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
  • Or the nearest landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, such as the one at Aldi.
  • The make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it is a diesel.
  • What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Over Wallop, so tell us which.
  • About how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
  • The distance it did, and how heavily, if it ran at all.
  • The owner may have to approve this work under some hire and company contracts — so it's faster to settle whose motor it is before our technicians get there.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not pressing, the vehicle parked at home with nowhere to be? Then will do too.

Waiting for a fuel drain around Over Wallop: what to do

During the wait, the damage comes from kindly meant help — so these count.

  • Wait with the vehicle if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • No one starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a couple of yards.
  • None of it takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from your boot. So no additives.
  • Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond that tank remains put anyway.
  • Leave the ignition off — the windows and the radio included.

When the van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

  • Fuel, quantity, whether it's run: those replies set this job, and that is why we give a price after them rather than before.
  • The tank is emptied. The polluted mixture comes out of that tank.
  • Petrol that has moved beyond the tank sits in your lines once it ran, and the fuel lines are cleaned to clear it.
  • Then the filter: replaced where there is a usable one, cleared where there's not.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, then the system is primed.
  • We start the car only after new diesel has gone in and bled your system, then check that it is running properly.

Only once it's running on clean diesel do we head off. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed quickly, so your car can go straight back to normal use.

Over Wallop, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Nothing unusual is needed after a start with fresh diesel — ordinary driving is all.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle hesitating: pull over and call us back.
  • The work may come up later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the documents.
  • Check the label on the pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
