Petrol in Diesel

Overleigh: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Overleigh and the remainder of Somerset. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Call us and then our team shall tell you what happens from here before you attempt much else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Do not fire it up. Started anyway? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Motorists get that muddled. It is not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Switching the car's ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.
  • Never pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Stallgrove Lane, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Our van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts BA16 0, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you ring.
  • What got in, approximately how much, and also if the motor has fired — these three replies decide your whole visit. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Phone us before you move the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and it outside Castle Cary ever since? Then the afternoon has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is harmless, and any harm came on the run in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had thinned.

We're in car parks like the one outside The Co-operative Food a lot, and it is almost never the fuel that complicates them. It is that bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height barrier at the entrance, which determines if our van gets to you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way the car is pointing. If there's no room to work beside your Skoda Octavia, our engineers move it without the motor. That's not fussiness over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank towards your pump, and a vehicle shifted twice for a roomier bay is quietly a worse job than one nobody touched.

You head off at the end, once we have started the engine and made sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park at The King Alfred, the polluted fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get cleaned and the fuel filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when our engineers get to your car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and parked the diesel Mercedes C-Class up by The Salvation Army - Street a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us then leave the vehicle off. The short hop truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has arrived at the filter and the pump — which is why our technicians purge your lines rather than only clearing the tank.

Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your wrongly fuelled Dacia Duster, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe close to Mission Church, and leave the restarting alone.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Overleigh

On the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

It starts at the pump, typically. Frequently the job ends on site as well. The drain usually gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Sainsbury's? Given the site's consent, that's a place our technicians work, and often.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the one spot this is spotted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting it four spaces doesn't warrant cranking the engine.

Service around Overleigh

Middle Leigh, Portway, Stone Hill, Lower Leigh, Marshalls Elm — all of these on the runs that take us across to Overleigh itself, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across Somerset, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list says nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Contact us and enquire rather than guessing — borders especially, and wherever your satnav can get wrong.

The map marks the ground the page spans. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is territory we cover, and none of it requires your car to travel to us.

Stranded on the roadside around Overleigh

A chance to stop anywhere safe doesn't fall to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge on Burleigh Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a normal call for us and not a rare one.

Whether you remain beside your car or step clear of it depends on if staying nearby seems wise. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: restart it to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. Our van driving to a tricky location is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for the car than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The M5 is the one which counts here, and runs under 15 miles from Overleigh. A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are usually lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and never start it to move it. It affects what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Overleigh itself

Overleigh is a suburban area in Somerset, situated inland at an elevation of 36 metres, approximately 7.5 miles from the city of Wells. Overleigh is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is located near other residential areas such as Middle Leigh and Portway. Overleigh sits within the wider region of the South West, around 115.9 miles west of London.

What we do when our engineers arrive with you in Overleigh

  • Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Our engineers empty your tank of the contaminated fuel.
  • What is left in the system should not be what started the trouble, so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running properly.

After that it's ready to set off. Our engineers do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

Overleigh AdBlue removal is a different job

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — never crank it — but the issue is not. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Overleigh has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Overleigh

One figure would not be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much that tank holds.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for our van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Overleigh

I am on a forecourt around Overleigh. Can you drain the vehicle here?

A large share of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission we work at Shell and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more frequently than drivers expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Keep it turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than people assume.
