Petrol in Diesel

Overseal: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet started, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Overseal and the remainder of Derbyshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Call us so our engineers can tell you what comes after that before you attempt much else.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part drivers get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Turning the car's ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition off.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort out, and we would rather drive to a difficult spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Burton Road, switch your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Before you ring, have your location. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting DE12 6 — that's what settles whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has been started. Those answers determine all that comes after.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left outside Burton-On-Trent since breakfast? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is harmless. It was the journey in that sucked weakened diesel through your pump. Phone before you move the vehicle.

If you've put petrol in your diesel Renault Megane around Overseal and you're now stuck outside Co-op Food with a boot loaded with shopping, phone. Don't crank it a second time to get out of the space. Our technicians will head your way, empty that tank, purge your fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls hardly any diesel, so such jobs are often the simple cases.

Three replies decide much of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers when we get to the car in the car park outside The Robin Hood. After that the contaminated mixture comes out of your tank, the fuel lines are flushed, and where your Audi A4 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the fuel system bled, we fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before you drive away.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left by Saint Matthew's Church. For a diesel Mercedes E-Class whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get cleaned and not just that tank drained.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Insignia by Overseal Baptist Church, and do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Almost no one can, in a car they collected two days ago, and our technicians work it out on site. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mix, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Overseal

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at the forecourt?

The job begins at a forecourt, generally. Regularly it wraps up on site as well. We work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Morrisons that is normally where the drain gets done.

Before your engine has run — a garage is the single spot this is spotted. We can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

The attendants will generally happily wheel the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing. Starting the car for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Overseal and the villages beside it

Being a village, Overseal sees a regular call, and its neighbours round about go with it on that same journey: Gorsey Leys and Short Heath, Spring Cottage and Ashby Woulds, Linton Heath.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places around Derbyshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours. Guessing is the mistake to skip, above all on a border or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Contact us to check.

The patch this page covers is on our map. Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

Kerbside breakdowns in Overseal

A chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not fall to everybody. If you realised after setting off and landed on the verge beside Main Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a normal call for us and not an odd one.

Whether you sit with the vehicle or move clear of it hangs on whether sitting in it is sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Pressing on does the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to an inconvenient location, and that is no trouble for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where your M42 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Overseal. A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they come are usually lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It alters what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

A bit about Overseal

Overseal is a village in Derbyshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 104 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Overseal lies near several smaller settlements, including Gorsey Leys and Short Heath, and is within commuting distance of Lichfield, which is 11.6 miles away. Overseal has a population of approximately 1938 residents, who enjoy a relatively rural location, despite being within a day's travel of London, which is around 104.5 miles to the south. Overseal's riverside setting provides a pleasant environment for its inhabitants.

What we do when our technicians arrive with you in Overseal

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers change what the work actually is.
  • Our technicians clear the tank of the polluted mixture.
  • Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in the fuel system isn't what started the issue.
  • Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime your system.
  • Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves your car ready to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Overseal

The problem isn't the same, though the opening rule is — do not fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Overseal page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Overseal?

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What changes it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely get to the car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Overseal drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Overseal?

A big portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It is salvageable far more often than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate problem. So no. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the car still with you?

Leave the engine shut off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

Throughout Derbyshire and in Overseal: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
