Petrol in a Diesel Car in Overton

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Overton and the rest of Lancashire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Ring us before everything else begins, and you'll learn what follows next.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start the vehicle. Turned on regardless? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally can't run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off happily, for a couple of miles. Most people get that muddled. It is not all right — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Don't water down it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to handle, and our team would much rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Main Street, switch your hazards on and keep the car there.
  • The van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting LA3 3, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you call.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what went in, roughly how much, and if the motor has been started. The responses decide everything that comes after.

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Forecourts are where the job usually starts, and where a big share of it finishes. Our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at Essar that is typically where the drain gets done.

Nowhere other than a garage can it be spotted with your motor still cold. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the offer. Firing the car just for four car lengths? Never.

Overton and the villages beside it

Being a coastal village, Overton gets a regular visit, whilst the areas close by come with it on the same run: Middleton and Sunderland, Glasson and Heaton, Stodday.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns in Lancashire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from this list tells you nothing at all about whether we come. Presuming is the habit to skip, above all on a boundary or somewhere your satnav gets lost. Call us and ask.

The ground the page covers is on our map. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers work on, and none of it asks your vehicle to come to us.

Twenty to nine by Overton St Helen's Church of England Primary School, already late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone us. Three miles in the Skoda Octavia seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — and a rushed morning run demands plenty.

A diesel Peugeot 308 in the parking area by Ship Inn with a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until somebody takes it home. Leave it there overnight then phone us in the morning. Nothing deteriorates whilst it stands. What we'll want to know is if the run there was short and chilly, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and whatever does not burn can slip past the piston rings then into the oil.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Mercedes C-Class travelled, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and flat on the way back is how the drive to Middleton Wood went, then, and your tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere safe, turn off and phone us.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres waiting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mix rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly no one knows how full that tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and our engineers work that out there. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to authorise the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then ring us about the Ford Fiesta close to Overton Scout Hut.

Purged, not drained — that's what a diesel Citroen C4 which got as far as St Helen's Church needs. Running a diesel puts the mix into the fuel filter, your lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

Overton: stranded where you pulled up

Some drivers find no suitable spot to pull over whatsoever. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Lancaster Road since you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the usual kind.

Out of the motor while it's not safe to wait inside, beside it if it is. Do not start it up to reach a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into your fuel system. Our van coming to a difficult place is no trouble for us, and it is a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The local M6 is the one that matters here, and runs under 5 miles from Overton. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they arrive are normally lost power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Take the first junction that is sensible, pull up there, and never start the car to reposition. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what we bring.

Overton itself

Overton is a small village in Lancashire, situated near the coast and close to the city of Lancaster. Overton has a low elevation of around 12 metres, and its proximity to Lancaster makes it a popular residential area. Overton is characterised by its semi-detached housing and is located near other nearby places such as Middleton and Glasson.

The call-out in Overton, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • We empty that tank of all the polluted fuel.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the problem, and so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleaned.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • It is run with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it is running properly.

From there, you're ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Overton?

Do not crank it: that first instruction holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and residue.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Overton has its own page with the detail — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Overton

What moves the figure is listed below, as this job is not one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. If it is not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common queries around Overton

I'm on a forecourt around Overton. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this happens. Our technicians work at JET and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix pulled through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more commonly than drivers fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

The motor stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it afterwards. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than drivers expect.
