Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Oving?

Don't fire up the engine. While the petrol is still inside that tank and the engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Oving and the rest of Buckinghamshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Contact us before everything else begins, so you'll know what happens next.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Don't fire it up. Started all the same? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a couple of miles. Most people get that muddled. It is not all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition alone as well. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it greases the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which moves that petrol out of your tank and into precisely those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to handle, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on The Pightle? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A difficult spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode starting HP22 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
  • Three details shape the entire job: the fuel you put in, the approximate measure of it, and whether it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

It begins at a forecourt, usually. Frequently the job wraps up there as well. The drain typically takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Gulf? Given the station's permission, that's somewhere our engineers work, and routinely.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the one place the mistake ends up stopped. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and your filter require cleaning as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car sits.

The attendants will normally help you roll the car away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing. Cranking it just to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Oving

We're in car parks like the one at Budgens a lot, and it is hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It is that bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the entrance, which settles if a van can reach you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way your car is pointing. If there is no space to work beside that Audi A4, we move it without the engine. That's not pedantry over a few seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of the tank toward your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a roomier bay is quietly a harder job than one no one touched.

Your Mercedes C-Class stays where it is in the car park by The Black Boy for the whole job, which normally goes like this. First we ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since, given that most of the work depends on those replies. That tank is emptied of the contaminated blend, the lines are flushed, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With clean diesel in and the fuel system primed, your car is started and checked, and once it is running correctly you set off.

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us. Happy on the way out to the green space at the edge of the village, gutless on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Dacia Duster travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by Village Hall. For a diesel Peugeot 3008 whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Call us, and let it stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just your tank cleared.

The slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of sloppy. Unfamiliar locations see most of that for that reason. So: topped up near All Saints without thinking, in a diesel BMW 1 Series you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody realises, and mileage settles how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

Oving and the villages beside it

These same runs carry us to Hunters Yard, Pitchcott, Whitchurch, North Marston and Creslow along with Oving, which is a rural village.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most places around Buckinghamshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Ring us and check rather than guessing, above all if you're on the boundary or anywhere your phone struggles with.

This map shows the patch this page covers. The lot is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

Kerbside breakdowns around Oving

Not everybody has the chance to stop anywhere safe. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge on Bowling Alley or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Whether you wait with the car or keep clear of it depends on if being in it looks safe. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. We'll send our van to an inconvenient location without any trouble, and for your car that is far better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the M40 matters, under 15 miles away from Oving. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It changes what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

A little about Oving

Oving is a small village in Buckinghamshire, situated in the inland countryside of the South East region. Oving sits at an elevation of around 165 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Oving is located near several other villages, including Hunters Yard, Pitchcott, and Whitchurch, and is approximately 11.8 miles from Milton Keynes. Oving has a population of around 534 residents.

What comes next when our technicians reach you in Oving

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Your tank gets emptied of everything.
  • Our engineers clean the fuel lines and clear the filter, so what is left in the fuel system is not what started the issue.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • The engine is started and checked to be sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Our engineers do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

Oving AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — while the issue beneath it's a different one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Oving has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Oving?

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Oving drivers

Fuel drains on a Oving petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our technicians visit JET and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It is fixable far more often than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Standing next to it?

Never switch it on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later on. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
