Petrol in Diesel

What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Oxclose

Pause, then leave the engine off — not on, and not for a moment to shift the vehicle. Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever the vehicle has stopped — and no other factor decides that more than these next few minutes do. From now on, in order, wherever you are in Oxclose:

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

In this order, all before anything else:

  • Keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be enough to prime the system, while priming pulls petrol out of the tank toward the components it damages. Leave the car off altogether.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of that petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same blend.
  • Make your car simple to see first — hazard lights on — if there's moving traffic anywhere close to you.
  • By hand, not on the engine: that is how it comes off the pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the miles.
  • The first thing you will be asked is which fuel you put in and about how much — and the till receipt says both. Hold on to it.

If you were still on the move when you noticed, stop somewhere safe rather than pushing on for the services — on the A194(M), under a mile from Oxclose, that means the next exit. Step one comes next.

The fork in each Oxclose fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Not run, not even briefly:

  • No place but the tank: that is where the petrol still is.
  • Draining and flushing, on the spot, is normally all of it.
  • No place is better, and it's why the first step counts so much.

If the engine has been run, even briefly:

  • From your tank, through the fuel filter, into the fuel lines: that is how far that petrol has got.
  • Run it farther and that petrol gets to the fuel injectors, having passed through the pump first.
  • Distance is what makes it a bigger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your high-pressure pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line falls where it does. In your tank, sitting still, petrol harms nothing. Pump the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

Oxclose, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Whether the van circles or finds you depends on a little planning.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode starting NE38 0 serves best.
  • The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Dunstanburgh Close, or wherever you have stopped.
  • Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: say the one at Asda, and it's simple.
  • That it's a diesel, along with the make and model of the vehicle.
  • Say which went in — petrol or AdBlue — because AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Oxclose.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.
  • The mileage it covered, and how heavily, if it ran at all.
  • The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire or company agreements — so it's faster to settle whose car it is before our technicians arrive.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home and going nowhere — does the trick too.

Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around Oxclose

Stick to these: well-meant help does the harm during the wait.

  • Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it is, wait with it.
  • Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: nobody starts it.
  • Additives remain in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of that petrol out a second time.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is dangerous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Do not try a home-made drain.
  • Leave the ignition off — the windows and the radio too.

Step by step: your fuel drain when the van arrives

  • The quote comes after three questions, not before them — what got in, how much, and if it has run — because those replies shape the job.
  • Next the tank is emptied, so the contaminated fuel is taken out.
  • Petrol that has moved beyond the tank travels in the fuel lines once it ran, and the lines are flushed to clear it.
  • The filter is seen to. Cleared, or replaced where the car has a workable one.
  • Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.
  • Our engineers start it only after fresh diesel has gone in and bled the system, then check that it's running smoothly.

Only once it's running on new diesel do our technicians leave. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it has been noticed early, so the vehicle can go right back to normal use.

Once your fuel drain is done: driving in Oxclose once more

  • After it's been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or your throttle hesitating: pull over then ring us back.
  • Keep the documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • Next time, trust the petrol pump's label instead of the colour of its handle.
