Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Padiham?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Padiham and the remainder of Lancashire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still inside your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Contact us and our engineers can show you what happens from here before you do anything else.
Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Don't start the vehicle. Started all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run, so the person stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for several miles. Drivers get that backwards. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Turning the ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.
- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so don't put diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- We would sooner get to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a vehicle that has never moved. On the verge on Burnley Road, that means hazards on and keep the car.
- Our van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting BB12 8, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you call.
- What was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has started — those three details settle your whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel
The job kicks off at the pump, typically. Often enough the job wraps up on site too. If you're still on the forecourt at Valero, that is normally where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.
Nowhere other than the forecourt can this be stopped with your motor still untouched. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.
The staff will normally offer to roll it clear of the pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing. Cranking the car just for four vehicle lengths? Never.
Diesel Renault Megane. A few litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Switched off now, outside Lidl. That's the enquiry we want, as the question beneath it is about quantity through the pump rather than hours on the clock.
Easy job, this one — till somebody takes it home. A diesel BMW 3 Series left at Hand & Shuttle with petrol in your tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so park the car and phone once it is light. Expect a question about that run there, though. Brief and cold is precisely where petrol fails to burn, and what will not burn can work past the rings then into the sump.
We clean the lines rather than only emptying the tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance genuinely assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Nissan Qashqai parked up near St Leonard's a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.
New spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical rather than sloppy: the slimmer petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up by Boyes without thinking, in a diesel Ford Focus you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody notices, and mileage is what settles how much petrol reaches the fuel injectors.
It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went limp, your idle turned ragged, and your diesel Mercedes E-Class is now resting by Padiham Pool. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly instead of the engine giving up — and since there is no warning for it, motors in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody calls. Please don't. Switch it off and phone us.
Service near Padiham
Habergham, Simonstone, Hapton, Altham, Rose Grove — all of them on our trips that bring us out to Padiham too, a riverside town.
If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for nearly all towns around Lancashire, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours. Phone to check rather than presuming — borders above all, and wherever your satnav might struggle with.
That map is the ground this page includes. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle does not need to travel to us.
Stopped at the roadside anywhere around Padiham?
A chance to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't come to everybody. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Mill Street because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.
Clear of the motor when it is not safe to sit in it, with it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However tricky the place, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for your car than driving on.
Driven it already? Stop, then read this
Your M65 is the one which counts here, and it sits under 3 miles from Padiham. A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are typically lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.
Take the next exit that is safe, stop there, and never start the vehicle to move it. It changes what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

What our technicians do when our technicians get to you around Padiham
- Our engineers check what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
- Away comes the tainted fuel.
- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
- Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
- Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
That leaves it ready to pull away. Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been caught early, it is very unusual for there to be permanent damage.
A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Padiham
Never crank it: that opening instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.
Both are ours. There's a separate Padiham page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Padiham costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain
What moves the figure is laid out below, since the job is not one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single price on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?
Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel questions from Padiham motorists
Fuel drains on a Padiham petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a good part of this work takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?
Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It's recoverable far more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
You, and your car, still together?
Don't turn it on again.
If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from far more regularly than people assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.
