Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Panshanger? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Panshanger and the rest of Hertfordshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not been started and the fuel is still inside the tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Our engineers will tell you what your next move is. Phone — it happens before everything else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • As you drive, the pump and your injectors wear. This is why you don't start the car, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Diesel burns, and before it burns it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition off also: turning it on is usually enough to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Watchlytes, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a car that never moved.
  • The van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts AL7 2, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you dial.
  • Three details decide the full visit: the liquid you tipped in, the ballpark quantity of it, and whether anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

How far you went is what our technicians ask about, not how long the car has been stood — and this is why. Diesel performs two roles on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before burning it greases the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a hurried fill on the drive in, the penny dropping somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Renault Clio parked at Welwyn Garden City since quarter past eight means those couple of miles were travelled with the pump running on a liquid drained of most of its protection. Call us then keep the car precisely where it stands.

A diesel Mercedes C-Class parked in the car park outside Attimore Hall holding a tank of petrol in it is a simple job, right up till somebody drives it home. Leave the car there overnight then phone us next morning. Nothing worsens as it stands. What we will ask about is whether the run there was short and cold, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can get past the rings and into the sump.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Audi A6 parked close to Panshanger Community Centre hardly two streets on. Ring us, and leave the vehicle off. A short hop does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence flushing your lines instead of only emptying your tank.

Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That's your misfilled Citroen C3, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly by Panshanger Church, then leave the restarting alone.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, your idle turned ragged, and your diesel Volkswagen Touran is now resting close to All Saints. That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly not your engine failing — and as there's no warning for it, vehicles in that position typically get driven again before anybody phones. Do not. Switch it off then phone us.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Much of the work begins at the pump, meaning a large chunk of that is finished there. If you are still on the forecourt at Morrisons, that is generally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.

Before your engine has fired — a garage is the single place this gets halted. We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Well worth it. Cranking it for four car lengths? No.

Service near Panshanger

These same trips take us to Hall Grove, Peartree, Woodhall, Haldens and Tewin along with Panshanger, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and nearly all locations around Hertfordshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Close to the boundary, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Contact us to ask rather than assuming.

Use the map for the ground shown here. The car doesn't need to travel to us. We work across all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Panshanger: stuck where you parked

Some drivers get no suitable spot to stop whatsoever. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up along the verge of Grove Meadow, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Sit by the car while it's wise to sit in it, yet clear of it if it isn't. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. We'll take our van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for your car that is far better than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull in, and read below

This is where the A1(M) comes in, under 3 miles away from Panshanger. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and don't restart it to move it. Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What our technicians bring differs.

Where's Panshanger?

Panshanger is a suburban area in Hertfordshire, situated approximately 20 miles north of London and 8 miles south of St Albans. Panshanger lies near the villages of Hall Grove, Peartree, and Woodhall, and is characterized by its predominantly flat housing stock. Panshanger has a population of around 7737 people and is located at an elevation of 82 metres above sea level.

What happens when our technicians get to you around Panshanger

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses alter what the work really is.
  • Our technicians drain your tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the trouble, and so your fuel lines get purged and your filter cleaned.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • It's run with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running smoothly.

From that point, you're ready to drive away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very rare.

Panshanger AdBlue removal is a distinct job

Never crank it: that opening instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal around Panshanger has its own page with the detail — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Panshanger prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the price is set out below, because the job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Panshanger

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Panshanger?

A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct problem. So no. That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it after that. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
