Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pant

Do not start the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, across Pant and the rest of Merthyr Tydfil, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. We can explain what the following stage is. Ring us — it comes before everything else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Don't start the car — and never depend on it when it starts. This is the bit drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just can't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, idles and drives off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It is grinding that fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it ignites it lubricates — the injection pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: turning it on is commonly enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes — so never put diesel on top to thin it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, and our team would much rather get to a difficult location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Pant Close, turn the hazards on then keep it there.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning CF48 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what went in, about how much, plus whether the car has been run. Those responses decide everything that follows.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of the job begins at the pump, meaning a good chunk of it ends up finished there. If you are still at the forecourt at Asda, that's typically where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's consent.

Nowhere but a garage can the mistake be caught with your engine still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you roll the car. Well worth doing. Cranking the car for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Pant

Petrol in your Skoda Octavia, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Asda, somewhere around Pant? Then phone, and leave the engine out of it — not even to exit that space. Somebody comes to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile pulls little, so these are often the easy ones.

It will fire up. It will drive off just fine. That is the trouble, because a diesel on a diluted tank behaves generally whilst grinding the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, never chance the trip home from Quarrymans Arms — leave the Nissan Qashqai then phone.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through, and petrol weakens it. That's the whole process, and it explains the usual Morlais Castle Golf Club call: a diesel Audi A4 that travelled out there without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts bleeding past tolerances instead, and the motor gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. None of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

Your pump waits before your injectors, and so whatever a worn-out one gives off moves on with the fuel — which is why we are firm about not driving on. Call us, then leave your diesel Vauxhall Astra where it's near Christchurch Pant.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle lumpy, and your diesel Citroen C3 is parked up by the far end of the built-up part. The motor isn't failing — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours usually get driven once more before anybody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and phone us.

Pant and the places near it

Those same trips get us to Pen-y-wern, Galon Uchaf, Dowlais, Dowlais Top and Morlais Castle along with Pant, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most towns across Merthyr Tydfil have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Ring us to enquire instead of assuming, particularly where you're on the border or anywhere the satnav gets wrong.

That map is the ground the page covers. All of that is ground our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move your vehicle anywhere.

Stranded by the kerbside near Pant

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull in anywhere safe. Set off, then realised? Ended up on the verge beside King Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you sit beside the car or keep away from it rests on if sitting nearby feels safe. Do not restart your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into your fuel system. A technician driving to an awkward place is no bother for us, and it's much better for the car than driving on.

Driven it already? Stop, and check this

Here is where the local M4 matters, under 25 miles out of Pant. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition. Long run? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in the van.

Pant itself

Pant is a suburban area situated on the shores of a lake in Merthyr Tydfil, with Pant being one of the higher elevation communities in the area at around 333 metres. Pant sits near the communities of Pen-y-wern, Galon Uchaf, and Dowlais, and is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing. Pant is located approximately 20 miles from Newport and 139 miles from London, making it a relatively remote suburban area.

What happens when we arrive with you in Pant

  • Our engineers check what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
  • Our technicians empty the tank of all the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • It's run with new diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running correctly.

From there, you are ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pant

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — while this problem underneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Pant has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Pant?

Our engineers can't put one price on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to your car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from Pant motorists

Fuel drains on a Pant petrol station forecourt

A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes. Our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is your car still with you?

Never switch it on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
