Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Park Lane

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Park Lane and the remainder of Greater Manchester. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While your engine has not run and the fuel is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Our engineers shall explain what your next stage is. Call us — that happens before everything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That is why you don't start the car, and why you never believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Switching your ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so do not tip diesel on top to water down it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Our team would rather travel to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to sort than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on Parkstone Avenue, that means hazards on and leave it.
  • Our van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts M45 7, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Have both prepared before you call.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, approximately how many litres, and also whether your car has started. These three details determine the entire job.

The journey back would roughly double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already forced a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Renault Clio. So keep the vehicle where it stands. Phone us from the platform if that's handier — nobody needs you hovering over the car outside Clifton whilst our technicians get on, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

Our technicians will come out to you, clear your tank, clean your fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can get home. So if petrol went into your diesel BMW 3 Series in Park Lane and you are stuck outside Aldi with a boot full of shopping, call us — and don't crank it once more to exit the spot. A mile or so at light throttle uses very little of it, so these are often the easy ones.

Every restart primes the lines and draws more petrol through your filter and into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags outside Higher Lane Primary School is a hassle, whereas the same car fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. Somebody will urge you to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. Leave it, let them moan, and ring us.

A diesel Mercedes C-Class parked in the parking area at The Parkfield Inn carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till somebody drives it home. Park the vehicle overnight then ring us next morning. Nothing worsens whilst it stands. What our technicians will want to know is if the run there was brief and cold, since that's where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and what does not burn can get past the piston rings and into the oil.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past tolerances instead, leaving the engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered round. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it passes through — that's the whole process. It accounts for the normal Sedgley Park R.U.F.C Training Ground call too: a diesel Audi A3 that drove out without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this work starts at a pump, meaning a good part of it ends up completed there. Still at Shell? Then that's normally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.

Before your motor has fired — a forecourt is the one setting the mistake gets spotted. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key.

Wheel the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Areas our vans serve in Park Lane

Stand, Chapel Field, Whitefield, Outwood Gate, Besses o th Barn — each of those on our journeys that bring us over to Park Lane itself, a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns around Greater Manchester, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Close to the border, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Contact us to enquire rather than guessing.

The area the page spans is on this map. The lot is territory we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the car anywhere.

Park Lane: stranded where you parked

Some people have no safe place to stop at all. A common call for us instead of an unusual one: worked out after setting off, ended up along the verge beside Ferndale Avenue or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Clear of the vehicle while it is not safe to wait inside, with it if it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to reach somewhere handier and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. However tricky the place, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for your car than driving on.

Run it already? Pull in, and see this

The local M60 is the road that counts now, and it runs under a mile from Park Lane. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next junction that's sensible, pull up there, and don't start the vehicle to move it. Suppose the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

Park Lane itself

Park Lane is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated approximately 4.2 miles from Salford and 167.7 miles from London. Park Lane sits at an elevation of 111 metres, characterised by detached housing and a relatively small population of around 2854 residents. Park Lane is located near other local places such as Stand, Chapel Field, and Whitefield, within the North West region of England.

When our technicians arrive with you around Park Lane: what follows

  • Three things get established before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • That tank is drained of it.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • After it is started, our engineers confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Park Lane is a distinct matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the problem beneath it is a distinct one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Park Lane page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Park Lane

We can't put one number on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where the car is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. If it's not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Park Lane

At a petrol station in Park Lane, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good portion of this work happens there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving takes the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. Your pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Keep the car shut off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
