Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Park

Don't start your engine. While the petrol is still in the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, all over Park and the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us and our engineers can explain what happens next before you attempt anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Do not crank it. Fired up anyway? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically will not run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for several miles. People get that backwards. It is not all right — that fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is often enough to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of your tank then into exactly those parts.
  • Do not put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage as that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it only hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We'd sooner drive to an awkward location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to handle than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Park Lane, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.
  • A van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning BD17 7, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you ring.
  • Three facts shape the entire job: the liquid you put in, the rough amount of it, plus whether anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where the job mostly kicks off, and where a good share of that closes. Still at Esso? Then that's generally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can this be caught with your engine still unrun. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where the car stands.

The attendants will normally happily roll it away from the pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Moving the car four spaces doesn't merit starting the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Park

If you have put petrol in your diesel BMW 3 Series around Park and you're now stranded at Aldi with a boot full of shopping, phone. Never fire it up again to get out of the spot. We will come out to you, empty that tank, clean the fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at light throttle pulls little fuel, which is why these are often the easy cases.

Every restart primes your lines and drags more petrol past the filter and into the pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes C-Class on the zig-zags outside Baildon Church of England Primary School is a nuisance, while the same car restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. A passer-by will urge you to move the car out of the gateway and deal with it later. Do not. Leave it, let everyone moan, then ring us.

What we'll ask is whether the drive there was short and chilly, because that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and what doesn't burn can get past the rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Dacia Duster standing in the parking area outside The Halfway House Bar & Dining with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens as it waits, so park the vehicle overnight then ring us first thing.

Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Whatever your diesel Audi A3 did on the way to Tong Park Playarea, it is doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.

A person confident will tell you to drain the vehicle and put new diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Kia Sportage by Tong Park Memorial and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there's petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is suck it back through your pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Phone us. Your system gets cleaned, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed vehicle from one that merely starts.

Park and the towns near it

The same trips carry us to Tarn, Tong Park, Brook Hill, Low Baildon and Charlestown besides Park, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for the majority of locations around West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from the list tells you nothing at all about if our technicians come. Close to the boundary, or somewhere the satnav struggles with? Contact us to enquire instead of guessing.

This map outlines the patch this page includes. All of it is ground we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Stuck by the kerbside anywhere around Park?

Some people find no suitable spot to pull over whatsoever. A common call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge of Langley Lane or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Clear of the car if it's not safe to be there, with it when it is. Never start up your engine to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into the system. We'll send our van to a tricky spot without any trouble, and for the car that is far better than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has gone

Here is where your M606 matters, under 10 miles from Park. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that's safe, stop there, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. On a longer run — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Park itself

Park is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 91 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Park lies approximately 4.2 miles from Bradford and is close to nearby places such as Tarn, Tong Park, and Brook Hill. Park is part of the larger urban area surrounding Bradford, with the city's amenities and services within easy reach. Park has a population of around 3161 residents.

When our engineers arrive with you around Park: what follows

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • We drain the tank of all the polluted fuel.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what caused the trouble, so the lines get purged and your filter cleaned.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It's run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Park is a distinct problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — while this problem beneath it is a distinct one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Park page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Park?

One price would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank takes.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's safe for our van.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. If it isn't urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel in Park

I am on a forecourt in Park. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Our technicians attend UK Petroleum and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the car off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable much more often than motorists assume.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers fear, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
