Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Parton?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Parton and the rest of Cumbria. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. While your engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Contact us before everything else starts, and you'll see what happens from there.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up. Fired up anyway? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for several miles. Most people get that muddled. It's not fine — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Turning your ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition alone.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Brewery Brow? Hazards on, then keep the car there. An odd spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • Have your position ready before you ring. A postcode that starts CA28 6 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what got in, roughly how many litres, and if the car has been started. Your answers determine everything that happens next.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

The work begins at a pump, mostly. Frequently the job ends there as well. We operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, and so if you're still at BP that's normally where this drain happens.

No place other than a garage can the mistake be spotted with your engine still unrun. Our technicians can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they generally will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that's worth doing. Moving the car four bays does not merit cranking the engine.

Service near Parton

As a coastal village, Parton gets a steady visit, and its neighbours round about go along on the same round: Lowca and Quality Corner, Howgate and Bleachgreen, Bransty.

There are pages for nearly all towns around Cumbria, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Ring us and check rather than assuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere your phone might get wrong.

That map outlines the ground this page includes. All of it is territory our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never drive your car anywhere.

Twenty to nine. Outside St Bridget's CofE School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn your hazards on, leave your motor alone, then phone. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Ford Focus or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a dash taken in a rush needs a great deal of it.

Do not risk it. The drive home from the pub in the village is entirely possible, which is exactly the problem — a weakened tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the components the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Phone us, then let the Dacia Duster stay where it sits.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left your diesel Mercedes E-Class up close to Parton Village Hall a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us then leave the car off. The short distance really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has got to your filter and the pump — which is why our engineers clean the fuel lines instead of only clearing that tank.

Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfuelled diesel Audi A3 telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, close to St. Bridget's or anywhere else, and never restart it to find a better location.

Cleared, not emptied — that's what a diesel BMW 5 Series which got as far as Moresby Parish Village Hall needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into the fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail, none of which empties with that tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

Parton: stranded where you pulled up

Not everybody has the opportunity to stop anywhere sensible. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Foundry Road because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Stay with the vehicle while it is wise to be there, yet clear of the vehicle if it isn't. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the system with every mile driven. A van heading to a tricky place is no trouble for us, and it's a lot better for your car than driving on.

Run it already? Pull over, then see this

under 50 miles from Parton, the local M6 is what counts here. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not start the car to move it. Long run? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in the van.

Parton itself

Parton is a small coastal village in Cumbria, situated near the towns of Lowca and Whitehaven, and is characterized by its terraced housing. Parton sits at a low elevation of around 7 metres, close to the sea and near the communities of Quality Corner and Howgate. Parton is located approximately 34 miles from Carlisle and 255 miles from London, making it a relatively remote village in the north west of England. Parton has a population of around 603 people, according to recent estimates.

Our job around Parton, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tainted mixture comes out of the tank.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Our technicians put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • Once it is fired up, we confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off. All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Parton?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this problem underneath it is a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Parton page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Parton costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What shifts the price is laid out below, since the job isn't one job and our technicians cannot honestly put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Whether a van can safely get to the car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. If it isn't time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Parton

I'm on a forecourt in Parton. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians attend Tesco and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more regularly than people expect.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later. This is recoverable from much more frequently than people expect, and a stationary, cold car is the best position to be in.
