Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pather? Don't Start It
With your tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet turned over, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Pather and the remainder of North Lanarkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Our engineers can show you what your next step will be. Contact us — it goes before anything else.
The first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Don't start it — and never believe it when it starts. This is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just can't run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and drives off quite happily for a few miles. It isn't fine. It is grinding your fuel system as you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off also — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for exactly those parts.
- Never thin it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Caledonian Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A difficult place works for us better than a started engine.
- Have your position ready before you ring. A postcode beginning ML2 0 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van showing up and the van circling.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, approximately how much, and if your car has been run. Your answers shape everything that comes after.
Never run it home. The commute has already put a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the trip back would more or less double it for no purpose at all. Call us from the platform if that's handier. We do not need you hovering over your car outside Wishaw while we work, and our team would very much rather hear from you tonight than find out on Monday.
Hazards on. Engine off. Phone. It's twenty to nine outside the local primary school, you're late, and the till receipt says unleaded — and although three miles in the Audi A4 sounds like nothing, fuel gets metered to demand, and a rushed drive needs plenty of that.
Here is what a job in the car park by The Wishaw Malt generally looks like. Our engineers reach the car, ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since — these three answers settle much of the work. Then the polluted mix comes out of that tank, your lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then our engineers fire it up, check it runs properly, and you pull away.
Calling from close to Roman Catholic Chapel? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it's on. Room for a technician beside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself scarcely matters: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped space than a car somebody has driven somewhere simpler. Then it is a drain for the Peugeot 208, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines purged, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not your tank.
Drain it then put fresh diesel in — that's the tip you'll get, normally from a person sure of themselves, and it's half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso close to South Wishaw Parish Church and it would start, which is what makes the tip sound reasonable. What happens next is the problem: the engine at once draws the petrol left waiting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, as emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. We flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where your vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between your car being fixed and the car merely starting.
On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel
A big part of the job is finished at the pump, because that's where it mostly begins. Still at Tesco? Then that is generally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the site.
Before your motor has fired — a forecourt is the single setting this is halted. The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the car sits.
Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Very much worth it. Cranking the car to shift four car lengths isn't.
Service around Pather
Pather is a residential suburb, and our team get out to the town and to the villages near it on those same runs: Wishaw, Netherton, Gowkthrapple, Greenhead and Dimsdale.
Not on that list? It says nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and most locations in North Lanarkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Close to the boundary, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Contact us and check rather than presuming.
The patch this page spans sits on this map. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the car does not need to move to us.
Stuck at the kerbside around Pather
The opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge beside Sunart Street, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.
Safe there? Stay by it. Not fine? Step out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere handier and that blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than a technician driving out to an inconvenient place, and that's no bother for us.
Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles
This is where your M74 comes in, under 3 miles away from Pather. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. It alters what we bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.
A little about Pather
Pather is a suburban area situated on the riverside in North Lanarkshire, with a mix of residential properties including predominantly flat-style housing. Pather sits at an elevation of 113 metres, close to the nearby towns of Wishaw and Netherton. Pather is located near Gowkthrapple and is approximately 13.7 miles from Glasgow, making it a commuter base for the city. Pather has a population of around 3705 residents.
What our technicians do when our technicians reach you in Pather
- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- Our engineers drain your tank of the contaminated mixture.
- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards is not the thing that started the problem.
- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
- Once it's fired up, we check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
That has it ready to set off. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.
Pather AdBlue removal is a different problem
The problem isn't the same, though the first rule is — do not start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Pather page. Both are ours to handle.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Pather
One price wouldn't be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.
A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.
Pather motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
I'm on a forecourt in Pather. Can you drain it on the spot?
A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's consent we visit BP and the other forecourts around town routinely.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether the engine has run matters much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. What decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the fuel system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
No. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.
Is your car still with you?
Don't turn it on again.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than drivers assume.
Throughout North Lanarkshire and around Pather: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
