Pedmore: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop. Motor off. Leave the car that way — no moment on, no moving it anywhere. Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the vehicle has stopped — and no other factor decides that as much as the next few minutes do. Wherever you are in Pedmore, this is how things run from here.

Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Do the following before anything else, in this order.

  • Keys out of your ignition. Switching the ignition on can be enough to prime your fuel system, and priming pulls petrol out of the tank toward the parts it damages. Keep it off completely.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Make your car simple to see first — hazards on — if there is traffic going past anywhere close to you.
  • By hand, never on the engine: that is how it leaves the pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the miles.
  • The first question you will be asked is which fuel you put in and about how much — and the till receipt says both. Hold on to it.

On the M5, under 5 miles from Pedmore, the next junction is the spot to come off; elsewhere, the first sensible spot to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Pedmore fuel drain: has the engine run yet, or not?

From this point on, everything hinges on a single answer.

If it has not once been started:

  • No place but your tank: that's where the petrol still is.
  • Normally it's drained and rinsed just where the car stands.
  • No spot is better, and it is why the first stage counts so much.

Run at all, however briefly:

  • Some petrol has left the tank already, gone through the fuel filter, and reached the fuel lines.
  • Your high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors get it on a longer run.
  • Lines flushed, the filter sorted, occasionally more: the job grows as the distance does.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure pump and your injectors oiled as it runs through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that is why the line is drawn there. Nothing is damaged by petrol that is only sitting in a tank. Petrol being pumped is grinding down the parts that shift it.

Calling about petrol in a diesel from Pedmore: what to have ready

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.

  • The best start is a postcode — one starting DY9 0 — for where you are.
  • Give the road — St Peter's Road or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Co-op Food, for instance — and it's far easier to find.
  • That it's a diesel, along with the make and model of your car.
  • Say which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for Pedmore.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
  • The distance it covered, and how hard, if it has run at all.
  • Whose car it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to authorise this work, and that's quicker settled before our technicians arrive than after.

Ring 0333 366 0103 once you've got that together — or, if your car is at home, going nowhere, use .

The wait for a Pedmore fuel drain, and what to do in it

Help, however well meant, is what does the harm while you wait. So hold to these.

  • Wait with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere exposed, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.
  • None of that takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.
  • No home-made clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is dangerous, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond that tank.
  • Even the radio or your windows are not worth switching your ignition on for.

Step by step: the fuel drain when our van gets there

  • Our price comes after three questions, not before them — what was put in, how much, and if it has run — because the replies set this job.
  • Clearing it is how the blend gets taken from your tank.
  • The fuel lines are cleaned. If it ran, that petrol has shifted beyond the tank, and your lines are holding it.
  • Cleaned, or replaced if the vehicle has a serviceable one: the filter is sorted next.
  • Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.
  • Starting up. When the system is primed with fresh diesel, we fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly.

Our engineers remain until it's running on new diesel. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, so the vehicle can go right back to normal driving.

Pedmore, after your fuel drain: back on the road

  • Started on new diesel, it needs nothing special of you. Simply drive normally.
  • The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your signal to stop then ring us a second time.
  • The work may matter later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to the paperwork.
  • Next time, trust the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
