Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pelton? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Pelton and the rest of Durham. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the motor has not run and the fuel is still in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Contact us before everything else begins, so you will see what follows after that.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And if started, do not believe it: the fuel system is grinding as you drive.
- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition stays off as well — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.
- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so do not add diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to handle, and we would rather drive to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Front Street, turn the hazards on then keep it there.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning DH2 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the car has been started. Your replies determine all that comes after.
Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel
A good chunk of this work ends up completed at the pump, as that is where it mostly starts. The drain typically happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the station's agreement, that's a place our engineers work, and regularly.
Nowhere else but a garage can this be spotted with your motor still untouched. Our engineers can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key are what determine that.
Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Very much worth it. Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.
The enquiry our technicians want sounds like this: diesel Renault Clio, some litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off outside The Co-operative Food. What we're really asking is how much fuel your pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.
You will be advised to move the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside Pelton Community Primary School, a wrongly fuelled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Fire it up three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime draws more petrol through your filter toward the pump. Let them moan. Phone.
Park it overnight. Phone us next morning. Nothing about a diesel Peugeot 308 sitting in the parking area at The Crown degrades whilst it stands, tank of petrol or not, and this job remains a straightforward one right up until the moment it gets driven home. The question we come with is about that run there: a cold engine over a short distance is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the rings into the oil.
Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while your car sits, since a diesel Nissan Qashqai parked at Stellagill Wood is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.
Your pump rests ahead of the injectors, and so whatever a wearing one gives off travels on with your fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Phone us, and leave your diesel Audi A4 where it's close to Pelton Library.
Service near Pelton
Pelton is a rural village, and so our team go out to the town and to anywhere near it on the same runs: Perkinsville, Pelton Fell, Ouston, Newfield and South Pelaw.
Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and most locations around Durham have a page of their own somewhere on our site. On a border, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Contact us to enquire rather than assuming.
That map shows the area this page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our engineers work on, and none of it needs the car to come to us.
Stuck on the kerb somewhere around Pelton?
A chance to pull in anywhere safe does not come to everybody. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Ouston Lane as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.
Whether you stay beside the motor or step away from it turns on if sitting there seems safe. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. However difficult the place, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than pressing on.
Run it already? Stop, then check this
Here is where your A1(M) comes in — under 3 miles from Pelton. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
Don't restart it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible junction then turn off. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What we bring changes.
A bit about Pelton
Pelton is a village in County Durham, situated inland at an elevation of 77 metres, approximately 6.6 miles from the city of Durham. Pelton has a population of around 2572 people and is characterized by predominantly terraced housing. When our technicians reach you around Pelton: what follows
- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
- We empty your tank of the polluted fuel.
- What is left in the fuel system should not be what created the problem, and so your fuel lines get purged and your filter cleaned.
- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running smoothly.
After that it's ready to pull away. Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.
A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Pelton
Don't start it: that first rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Pelton page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Pelton
What changes the price is listed below, since the job is not one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.
- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank can hold.
- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the car is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Pelton
Fuel drains on a Pelton petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this happens. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more often than people assume.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
No. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.
You, and your car, still together?
Switched off is the way the car stays.
Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the car remain that way. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers expect.
