Pen-clawdd: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not for moving it: the motor stays off. Stop there. Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and nothing decides that as much as the next few minutes do. Here's the order of things from here, anywhere you're around Pen-clawdd.

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

First, these — following this sequence.

  • Keys out of the ignition. Turning your ignition on can be enough to prime your fuel system, while priming draws petrol out of your tank toward the components it harms. Leave the car off completely.
  • Topping up with diesel sounds like it dilutes the trouble. It does not: nothing gets out, and your tank just carries more of the same.
  • Near moving traffic? Then the hazards go on before everything else, so the car is easy to spot.
  • By hand, never on your engine: that is how it comes off the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you push, whatever the distance.
  • Keep the till receipt: the grade and roughly how much are written on it, and they are what we ask about first.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next junction if you are on the M4, under 5 miles from Pen-clawdd, and stop somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Step one starts after that.

Pen-clawdd fuel drain: has the engine run yet, or not?

What happens after this turns on one answer, and only one.

If the motor has not run at all:

  • The petrol is still inside your tank and nowhere else.
  • Draining and flushing, on the spot, is normally the whole job.
  • This is the best position to be in, and the reason step one matters.

If it has been started, even for a second:

  • From that tank, through your filter, into your lines: that is how far that petrol has got.
  • Run it farther and the petrol gets to the injectors, having passed through the pump first.
  • Flushing the lines, the fuel filter dealt with, occasionally more: the job grows as the mileage does.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line sits where it does. In the tank, sitting still, petrol harms nothing. As soon as it is pumped, petrol starts wearing down whatever moves it.

Pen-clawdd, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A little planning is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that circles.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode starting SA4 3 works best.
  • Give the street — Victoria Road or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
  • Or the landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, like the one at CKs Supermarket.
  • The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it is a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Pen-clawdd page.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
  • If it has run, how far plus how hard — and if it has run at all.
  • The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire or company contracts — which is why it's quicker to settle whose motor it is before our technicians arrive.

Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home and going nowhere — does the trick too.

The wait for a Pen-clawdd fuel drain, and what to do in it

Help, however well meant, is what does the damage while you wait. So hold to these.

  • Your safety comes before the car. Somewhere dangerous? Get clear of the traffic and wait away from it. Fine where it sits? Wait with it.
  • Nobody — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move the car a short way.
  • No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from your boot — none of it gets the petrol back out.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is hazardous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Do not try a home-made drain.
  • The ignition stays off. Even for your radio or the windows.

Step by step: the fuel drain when our van gets there

  • First, three queries: which fuel went in, the quantity, and has it run? Those replies decide this job, so our price follows them.
  • Out of that tank comes the contaminated mixture: the tank is cleared.
  • Petrol that has moved beyond your tank travels in the lines if it ran, and your lines are flushed to clear it.
  • The fuel filter is dealt with. Cleared, or swapped where the vehicle has a serviceable one.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, then the fuel system is primed.
  • First start on fresh diesel. When bleeding is done, the engine is started and our engineers check that it runs properly.

Your car has fresh diesel running through it before our technicians leave. If it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual, and your car goes back to normal use straight away.

After the fuel drain is done: driving in Pen-clawdd once more

  • Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.
  • Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then ring us back.
  • Hold on to the paperwork. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
