Pen-twyn: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not started the engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Pen-twyn or the remainder of Caerphilly, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Our engineers will show you what your next move will be. Contact us — this comes before anything else.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. This is why you never crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Flicking the car's ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.
- Do not thin it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
- Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and we'd sooner get to a tricky location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Conway Road, switch those hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
- The van showing up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning NP11 3, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both prepared before you phone.
- What went in, roughly how many litres, and if the engine has started — the three replies shape your whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
The run in is what sucked thinned diesel through the pump. Sitting still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Renault Clio, left at Llanhilleth all day, rests harmless in that tank whilst it waits. Call us first — before the keys go in.
If you've put petrol in your diesel BMW 3 Series around Pen-twyn and you are now stranded at Tesco with a boot full of shopping, phone us. Do not fire it up a second time to get out of that space. Our technicians will come to you, clear your tank, purge your fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls very little of it, so such jobs are usually the easy jobs.
A diesel pump supplies fuel to demand, and a rushed morning drive demands plenty — so three miles in your Audi A4 seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, phone.
Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and parked the diesel Vauxhall Astra up by Trinant Community Centre a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us and leave it off. The short drive really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has got to the fuel filter and your pump — which is why we rinse your lines instead of only emptying your tank.
A car you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anybody sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the volume of petrol reaching your injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck accepts the slimmer petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so strange places see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, by Trinant Methodist Church or not, and we'll come to the Mercedes GLC.
Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt
Plenty of the work starts at a pump, meaning a large part of it ends up finished at one. If you're still at the forecourt at Texaco, that is generally where the drain takes place — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.
Before your motor has fired — the forecourt is the only setting it is halted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys.
The attendants will normally help you roll the car out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. It is worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths doesn't warrant starting the motor.
Areas we cover near Pen-twyn
The same trips take us to Cwm-nant-gwynt, Trinant, Glandwr, Brynithel and Pentrapeod along with Pen-twyn, which is a village.
We do come. The places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places around Caerphilly, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Close to the boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Contact us to ask rather than presuming.
The map shows the area this page spans. Every bit of it is ground our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move the vehicle anywhere.
Stuck on the kerbside in Pen-twyn
Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull over somewhere sensible. If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge of Belvedere Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a routine call for us rather than an unusual one.
Clear of the car while it is not safe to be inside, with it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. We'll send our van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is much better than carrying on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
Here is where the local M4 comes into it — under 10 miles from Pen-twyn. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Come off at the next safe junction, switch off, and never start the car to reposition. Long trip? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.

The job in Pen-twyn, step by step
- Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- Our technicians empty the tank of the tainted mixture.
- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that caused the problem.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
- The motor is started and tested to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.
That has it ready to pull away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pen-twyn is a separate matter
Do not fire it up: that opening instruction stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.
We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Pen-twyn has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more serious of the two.
Pen-twyn pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What shifts the price is listed below, because this job is not one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single figure on this page.
- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.
Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel queries from Pen-twyn motorists
Fuel drains on a Pen-twyn petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Regularly, provided the site consents: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more commonly than motorists expect.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
It isn't an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
Not at all. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.
You, and your car, still together?
The engine remains off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let it stay that way. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
Throughout Caerphilly and around Pen-twyn: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
