Penrhos: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Pause, and keep the engine off — not on, and not for a second to shift the vehicle. Cleared and flushed, right where it sits: that's generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple depends on the minutes to come far more than on anything else. What follows is the sequence from this point, wherever in Penrhos you are.

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

In this sequence, and before everything else:

  • Bleeding the fuel system draws petrol from your tank toward the parts it damages, and turning the ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys get taken out, and your ignition stays off completely.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Near moving traffic? Then the hazard lights come on before anything else, and so the car is easy to spot.
  • The attendants will usually help you push it away from the petrol pump. Ask, then move it by hand — never under your engine, even for a few yards.
  • Which fuel, and about how much? Your receipt replies both, and that's where our questions start. Don't throw it away.

On the M4, under 15 miles from Penrhos, the next junction is the place to leave the vehicle; elsewhere, the first safe spot to stop. Do not push on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

The fork in each Penrhos fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this point rests on one answer.

Engine never run at all?

  • The petrol is still in that tank and nowhere else.
  • The job is a drain and a flush, normally done where the vehicle stands.
  • Stage one counts for precisely this reason: it is the best position to be in.

If it's been started, even for a second:

  • Petrol has been drawn from your tank, through the filter and into your lines.
  • A longer run takes it all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.
  • Distance is what turns it into a bigger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does. In that tank, left alone, petrol does no harm. As soon as it is pumped, petrol begins grinding whatever moves it.

Calling about petrol in a diesel from Penrhos: what to have ready

A van that circles versus a technician that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode starting SA9 1 serves best.
  • Give the street — Brecon Road or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.
  • What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, and so say the landmark — like the one outside Tesco.
  • The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it is a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Penrhos page.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.
  • Whether it has run. And if it has, how far plus how hard.
  • Whose motor it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and that is quicker settled before our technicians get there than after.

Call 0333 366 0103 then. Email is fine too if it can wait, with the vehicle parked at home, going nowhere.

Penrhos fuel drain on its way? While you wait

The wait is where well-meant help does the damage. Hold to these.

  • Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, stay with it.
  • A kind passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anybody checking it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.
  • Anything from the boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.
  • Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond the tank stays where it is anyway.
  • Leave your ignition off — the windows and the radio included.

Step by step: your fuel drain when our van gets there

  • Fuel, volume, whether it has run: the answers decide this job, and that is why we give a price after them instead of before.
  • Your tank is drained. The polluted blend comes out of that tank.
  • The lines are rinsed. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond your tank, and the lines are carrying it.
  • Cleared, or changed if your car has a workable one: the filter is sorted next.
  • Fresh diesel in, and your system primed.
  • We start the car only after clean diesel has gone in and bled your system, then check that it's running correctly.

Only when it is running on clean diesel do we leave. Your car goes back to normal use at once, and permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly.

After your fuel drain: back on the road around Penrhos

  • After it has been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing unusual to do: drive normally.
  • Pull over and call us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, so keep your paperwork.
  • The handle's colour is not the guide to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
