Penrhys: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not fired up your engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in the tank and your engine has not been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has ended up in Penrhys or the remainder of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. One call to us is enough: our technicians will explain what follows after this. Make this first.
What to try first about petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start it. And once started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
- Leave the ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is usually all it takes to prime your system, which moves that petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.
- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Our team would rather drive to a tricky place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Heol Ioan, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
- Keep your location prepared before you call. A postcode beginning CF43 3 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van showing up and our van circling.
- What got in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the engine has run — the three answers settle the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Never drive it home. The commute has already put a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Renault Megane, and the journey back would more or less double it for no reason at all. Phone us from the platform if that is handier. We never need you standing over your car outside Llwynypia whilst our engineers work, and our team would very much rather talk to you tonight than find out on Monday.
Twenty to nine. Outside the local primary school. Late already, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put the hazard lights on, leave your engine alone, then phone. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a run taken in a rush asks for a great deal of it.
Park it there overnight. Phone next morning. Nothing about a diesel Ford Focus standing in the car park by the pub in the village worsens as it stands, tank of petrol or not, and this job stays a simple one right up till the moment it gets taken home. The query we come with is about the trip there: a cold engine over a short hop is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can find its way past the rings into the engine oil.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past gaps instead, leaving the engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through — that is the full mechanism. It accounts for the usual Penrhys Recreation Field call too: a diesel Mercedes C-Class that travelled out without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that is the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.
What takes place next is the trouble. The engine at once draws the petrol left waiting in your filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, someone sure of themselves will tell you — and that suggestion is only half right, because do it to a diesel Citroen C4 parked up, Tylorstown Welfare Hall say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Ring us instead. Our engineers flush the system and take your filter off where the vehicle has a working one, and that's the difference between your car being fixed and your car merely starting.
At the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel
Plenty of this job begins at the pump, which means a good chunk of that is finished on site. Still at Shell? Then that's typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.
At a garage, this gets halted with the engine never fired, and no place else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys.
Push the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Rolling it four bays doesn't merit cranking the engine.
Penrhys and the places near it
Being a village, Penrhys gets a frequent visit, whilst the areas round about go along on that same trip: Stanleytown and Pontygwaith, Tylorstown and Ystrad, Llwynypia.
Our engineers do come. The names above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most towns around Rhondda Cynon Taf, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Phone to ask instead of assuming, especially where you are on a boundary or anywhere a satnav can't find.
The ground the page covers is on our map. The vehicle never needs to move to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Stuck at the roadside around Penrhys
Some people have no sensible place to pull over whatsoever. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Heol-y-Ffynon because you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.
Safe there? Stay beside it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. Do not restart the motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the system. Our van driving to an inconvenient spot is no problem for us, and it's much better for your car than pressing on.
Petrol in a diesel, but your car has rolled
Here is where your M4 matters, under 10 miles from Penrhys. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.
The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what our engineers bring.
A bit about Penrhys
Penrhys is a small village in Rhondda Cynon Taf, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 310 metres. Penrhys lies near the communities of Stanleytown, Pontygwaith, and Tylorstown, and is approximately 16 miles north of Cardiff. Penrhys has a population of around 694 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Penrhys is located in a scenic area, with the Welsh countryside surrounding the village.
When we get to you in Penrhys: what we do
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses change what the work really is.
- The tainted mixture comes out of the tank.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
- When it's fired up, we check it runs properly on new diesel.
The car is then ready for you to drive away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed quickly, and because everything is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.
Penrhys AdBlue removal is a separate problem
The fault is not the same, though the first instruction is — do not fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.
Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Penrhys page. Both are ours to handle.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Penrhys
One figure wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank takes.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
- Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.
Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.
Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Penrhys
I am on a forecourt in Penrhys. Can you drain it here?
Yes, and it is where a good share of this work gets done. Regularly, provided the site consents: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer straight away.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. What settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving moves the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
Is the car still with you?
The engine remains off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car afterwards. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
