Petrol in Diesel

Pentre-waun: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not fire up the motor. If the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not been started, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, across Pentre-waun and the rest of Monmouthshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Ring us before anything else begins, and you'll learn what comes from there.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start it. Started anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol car generally won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off happily, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that muddled. It isn't fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off also — switch it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for just those parts.
  • Never put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we'd sooner come to a tricky location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Parc Road, turn your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Keep your position ready before you ring. A postcode that starts NP4 0 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between a van arriving and a van circling.
  • Three facts determine the full job: the liquid you tipped in, the rough quantity involved, and whether it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

The trip back would roughly double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already sent a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Renault Megane. So leave the vehicle where it is. Ring us from the platform if that is quicker — nobody needs you hovering over the car at Pontypool and New Inn whilst our engineers get it done, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a rushed morning dash asks for plenty — so three miles in the Nissan Qashqai sounds like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine outside the local primary school, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, call us.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how that trip to Pentre-waun Wood went, your tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Mercedes C-Class went, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.

Why we are direct about not driving on: your pump rests before your injectors, and so whatever a worn-out pump loses moves on with your fuel. Leave the Dacia Duster near Christchurch then ring us.

Most of these happen somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical instead of slapdash — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Peugeot 3008, a fill-up near St Mary's Church that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the fuel injectors.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Pentre-waun

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at the forecourt?

Pumps are where the work mostly kicks off, and where a large share of that finishes. If you're still at the forecourt at BP, that is typically where this drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission.

At a garage, it is caught with the motor never fired, and nowhere else does it. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key settle how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the vehicle stands.

The staff will usually help you wheel the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get through. It is worth doing. Cranking the car just to move four car lengths isn't.

Coverage in Pentre-waun

Being a rural hamlet, Pentre-waun gets a frequent call, whilst the areas close by come with it on the same round: Coed-y-paen and Glascoed, Panteg and Lower New Inn, Monkswood.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of towns around Monmouthshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Ring us and ask instead of guessing, particularly where you're on the border or anywhere the satnav struggles with.

Look at our map for the ground included on this page. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the car doesn't need to come to us.

Stuck at the roadside around Pentre-waun

Not everyone gets a safe spot to stop. Set off, then noticed? Landed on the verge on School Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Remain beside the vehicle if it's sensible to wait inside, but out of the vehicle if it's not. Don't restart your motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into the fuel system. We'll take the van to an inconvenient spot without any trouble, and for your car that's much better than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, then check this

This is where your M4 comes into it — under 10 miles away from Pentre-waun. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition. Long drive? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

Pentre-waun itself

Pentre-waun is a small hamlet situated on the lakeside in Monmouthshire, with a mix of detached housing and rural scenery. Pentre-waun sits at an elevation of 128 metres, close to the nearby communities of Coed-y-paen and Glascoed. Pentre-waun is located near the city of Newport, which is approximately 7 miles away, and is part of a wider network of rural settlements in the area. Pentre-waun has a population of around 527 people, living in predominantly detached homes.

What follows when we get to you around Pentre-waun

  • Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • That tank gets emptied of it.
  • We flush your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is remaining in the fuel system isn't what started the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Pentre-waun

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — don't crank it — but this issue is not. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the protection the system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

AdBlue removal around Pentre-waun has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Pentre-waun pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is listed below, since the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Pentre-waun drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Pentre-waun petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this happens. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission we work at Shell and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is the car still with you?

Do not switch the engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
