Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pentrebane?

With your tank still carrying the petrol and the engine not yet turned over, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout Pentrebane and the remainder of Cardiff, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Ring us before everything else happens, and you'll know what comes after that.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you never crank it, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition stays off also — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for exactly those components.
  • Do not add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, and we would sooner travel to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Beechley Drive, turn those hazards on and leave it there.
  • The van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting CF5 3, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you dial.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, about how much, and if the motor has started. These three details decide your whole call-out.

The run in is what drew thinned diesel through your pump. Sitting still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, parked at Fairwater all day, waits idle in the tank whilst it waits. Ring us first — before the keys turn.

Petrol in the Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Co-op Food, somewhere around Pentrebane? Then ring us, and leave the engine out of it — not even to exit the spot. Somebody gets to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines purged, new diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile draws little, so these tend to be the simple jobs.

A passer-by will urge you to move the vehicle out of the gateway and deal with it later. Do not. A misfilled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags by the local primary school is a hassle; the same motor started three more times to be polite is a fuel system instead of a tank. Every restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol through the filter then into the pump. Leave it, let everyone complain, and ring us.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump isn't turning, so whatever happened on the way to Bellfields Park in that diesel Mercedes E-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the engine to find more of it.

Somebody confident will tell you to drain the vehicle and put new diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Kia Ceed by Holy Family and your engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the trouble: there's petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is draw it back through your pump once more. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Ring us. The system gets purged, the fuel filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed vehicle from one that simply starts.

Can petrol be taken from your diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job mostly kicks off, and where a big chunk of it ends. The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the site's permission, that is a place our technicians work, and regularly.

A filling station is the only setting this is stopped before the engine has fired. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians deal with it where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The attendants will usually happily push it away from the pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Cranking it to roll four car lengths is not.

Pentrebane and the villages beside it

Pentrebane is a residential suburb, and so our technicians head out to it and to the areas around it on those same runs: Fairwater, St Fagans, Llandaff, Ely and Radyr.

Our engineers do come. Those names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places around Cardiff, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Call us to enquire instead of presuming — boundaries especially, and wherever the satnav tends to misread.

The map is the patch this page covers. Your car does not need to travel to us. We operate throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Kerbside stops in Pentrebane

Some drivers get no suitable place to pull in whatsoever. Set off, then twigged? Finished up along the verge beside Pentrebane Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Stay by the car if it's safe to be inside, yet clear of the car if it is not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. However difficult the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the local M4 counts, under 3 miles out of Pentrebane. Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and never start the vehicle to move it. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what we bring.

A bit about Pentrebane

Pentrebane is a suburban area in Cardiff, situated near the River Ely and close to the city centre. Pentrebane has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant in the area. Pentrebane is located near several other suburbs, including Fairwater and St Fagans, and is about 3.5 miles from Cardiff city centre. Pentrebane sits at an elevation of around 39 metres above sea level.

The call-out in Pentrebane, step by step

  • We find out what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • Your tank gets emptied of everything.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that caused the trouble.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • Once it is started, our technicians check it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Pentrebane

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas the problem under it's a separate one altogether. Petrol dilutes your diesel and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Pentrebane has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Pentrebane

What moves the price is listed below, because the job isn't one job and we can't frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Pentrebane motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Pentrebane petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Radyr Service Station is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It is salvageable much more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't a modification, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

Leave it switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and let the car remain that way. This is recoverable from far more often than people fear, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Throughout Cardiff and around Pentrebane: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
