Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Perivale?
If you have not fired up the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has stopped in Perivale or the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Just one ring our way is enough: our engineers can tell you what happens next. Do it right away.
What to try first about petrol in a diesel
- Don't crank it. Fired up anyway? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car generally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that reversed. It is not fine — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Switching the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.
- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance implies — so don't add diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Launceston Road? Hazards on, then leave it there. A tricky place suits us better than a started diesel.
- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting UB6 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the car has run. These three details decide the whole visit.
Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at the forecourt?
A fair part of this work is completed at a forecourt, since that's where it often begins. We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at Sainsbury's that is generally where this drain gets done.
At a forecourt, this gets spotted with your engine never started, and nowhere else manages it. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where your car stands.
Staff will generally chip in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the help. Cranking the car just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.
How much fuel the pump has pulled is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry our engineers want goes like this: diesel Renault Clio, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now switched off at Sainsbury's.
Twenty to nine. Outside St John Fisher Catholic Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Put the hazard lights on, leave the engine alone, then phone us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a dash taken in a hurry demands a great deal of it.
Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Sudbury Golf Course in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of that.
About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Dacia Duster left by St. Mary with St. Nicholas - Perivale barely two streets on. Ring us, then leave it off. A short distance does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence flushing your lines rather than only emptying the tank.
Strange places are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical not careless: the narrower petrol nozzle goes into a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up near Perivale Library without thinking, in a diesel Peugeot 3008 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody spots it, and mileage is what decides how much petrol reaches your injectors.
Areas our vans cover around Perivale
Perivale is a residential suburb, so we head out to the town and to anywhere by it on those same trips: Alperton, Wembley, Sudbury, Stonebridge and Park Royal.
If yours is not on that list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations around Greater London, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours. Near the boundary, or anywhere your phone misreads? Contact us and ask rather than guessing.
The map outlines the patch this page includes. Every bit of that is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never drive your car anywhere.
Stuck at the roadside near Perivale
Some drivers have no safe place to stop at all. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Torrington Road because you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.
Out of the motor while it's not sensible to wait inside, with it if it is. Don't fire up the motor to nurse it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the fuel system. Our van heading to an inconvenient spot is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the car than carrying on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has rolled
Here is where the M4 matters, under 5 miles from Perivale. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Get off at the next safe exit, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to move it. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It changes what our engineers bring.
All about Perivale
Perivale is a suburban area in northwest London, situated on the River Brent at an elevation of around 23 metres. Perivale lies approximately 8.3 miles from central London and is close to nearby places such as Alperton, Wembley, and Sudbury. Perivale has a population of around 8287 people and is predominantly composed of terraced housing. Perivale is characterized by its riverside setting and residential community.
Our visit in Perivale, step by step
- The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.
- The tainted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
- We clean the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what's remaining in your system is not what caused the problem.
- Our engineers pour clean diesel in and bleed the system.
- Our engineers start the car and check it runs correctly on new diesel.
From there, you are ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and because all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Perivale is a different problem
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't crank it — yet the issue is not. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Perivale page. Both are ours to deal with.
Perivale costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
We cannot put one price on this page frankly, as this job isn't one job. What shifts it:
- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank takes.
- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Petrol in diesel questions from Perivale drivers
At a petrol station around Perivale, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this happens. Often, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the car off. Driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more regularly than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
Do not switch the car on again.
If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers assume.
