Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Perryfields?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Perryfields and the rest of Worcestershire. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the motor has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Ring us and we will explain what happens from here before you attempt much else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never crank it. And if started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.
  • Do not add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Our team would much rather get to a tricky place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Perryfields Road, that means hazards on and keep the car.
  • Before you dial, have your location. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts B61 8 — that's what decides whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Three answers shape the whole job: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark quantity involved, and if it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning commute labouring on a fuel that had shed a lot of the protection it is made for. Diesel protects that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So imagine a diesel BMW 3 Series, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left standing outside Bromsgrove until the penny drops close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a lot, which is why the question we put to you is about distance instead of time. Phone us. Keep the vehicle just where it sits.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Ford Focus, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at Aldi now. Time passed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

Why so direct about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is ahead of the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it loses downstream with the fuel. Phone us. Leave the Volkswagen Touran by Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, an uneven idle, knocking: that's a wrongly fuelled diesel Vauxhall Insignia telling you what is wrong. Don't restart the vehicle to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, near New Song Community Church or anywhere else.

What happens next is the issue. Your engine at once pulls the petrol left resting in your filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put clean diesel in, someone confident will tell you — and that tip is only half right, as do it to a diesel Skoda Superb parked up, Victoria Ground say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take the filter off where the vehicle has a working one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being put right and the car only starting.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of the job begins at a pump, meaning a fair chunk of that gets done on site. We work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at BP that's usually where the drain happens.

No place except a garage can the mistake be stopped with the engine still untouched. Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.

The attendants will normally happily move the vehicle away from the pump so the next customer can get by. That's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Will our engineers cover your corner of Perryfields?

As a rural hamlet, Perryfields sees a steady call, whilst the places round about come along on the same round: Sidemoor and Alfreds Well, Worms Ash and Red Cross, Bromsgrove.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and the majority of locations around Worcestershire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Call us to check instead of guessing, especially when you're on the border or anywhere your phone misreads.

Check this map for the patch covered here. All of it is ground we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move the vehicle anywhere.

Stuck by the roadside near Perryfields

The chance to pull over anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and landed on the verge on Oldfield Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a normal call for us rather than an odd one.

Fine there? Remain with it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. Do not start up the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into the system. However tricky the spot, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has gone

under a mile from Perryfields, the M5 is what matters now. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Get off at the first safe exit, turn off, and do not restart the car to reposition. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What we bring changes.

A bit about Perryfields

Perryfields is a small hamlet situated on the riverside in Worcestershire, with a relatively low elevation of 107 metres. Perryfields lies near several other local places, including Sidemoor, Alfreds Well, and Worms Ash, and is located approximately 11.6 miles from Birmingham. Perryfields has a population of around 1196 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Perryfields is also within a reasonable distance from London, at around 101.1 miles away.

Once our technicians arrive with you around Perryfields: what follows

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
  • We clear your tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • We flush the lines and clean your filter, and so what's left in the fuel system isn't what caused the trouble.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • Once it is started, our engineers make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon, and because all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Perryfields

The fault is not the same, though the first step is — do not crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Perryfields has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Perryfields pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What moves the figure is listed below, because the job is not one job and we cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel: common queries around Perryfields

I'm on a forecourt in Perryfields. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it's where a big share of this work gets done. We attend Esso and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable a lot more commonly than motorists expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to live with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

You, and your car, still together?

Never turn your engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more regularly than people expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
