Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Peterborough?
With that tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet started, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Peterborough and the remainder of Cambridgeshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Contact us and then our engineers shall explain what follows from here before you attempt any more.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Don't fire it up. Started anyway? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run, so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that reversed. It is not fine — that fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Turning your ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.
- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Church Street? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An odd location suits us better than a started engine.
- Get your position ready before you ring. A postcode that starts PE1 1 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.
- Three replies decide the entire job: the stuff you put in, the approximate measure involved, plus if anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Can petrol be drained from your diesel on a forecourt?
The job starts at a pump, generally. Often enough the job wraps up there too. The drain usually gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's consent, that is somewhere we work, and often.
The forecourt is the single location it is caught before your engine has started. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and your lines together with the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.
Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Welcome the offer. Cranking it to move four vehicle lengths is not.
How much fuel your pump has sucked is what we are truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry we like runs like this: diesel Peugeot 308, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now shut off at Siret.
Each restart primes your lines and draws more petrol through your filter and into the pump. So a misfuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags at Bishop Creighton Academy is a nuisance, while the same car started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. Someone will advise you to move the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. Leave it there, let them grumble, then ring us.
Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Whatever your diesel BMW 5 Series did on the way to Bishop's Gardens, it's doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive the car home to buy yourself any.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left near Saint John's Church. For a diesel Audi A6 whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, and let it stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why your lines get flushed and not just the tank emptied.
Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical not careless — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Mercedes A-Class, a fill-up close to Bridge Street War Memorial that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.
Do our technicians cover your part of Peterborough?
Peterborough is a new town, and so our vans go out to the town and to the places around it on the same journeys: Eastgate, New Fletton, Woodston, Old Fletton and Eastfield.
If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for most places in Cambridgeshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Call us and enquire instead of assuming — county lines above all, and wherever your phone tends to misread.
The area the page covers appears on our map. The lot is territory we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't move the car anywhere.
Stranded on the kerbside around Peterborough
Not everyone has a safe place to pull in. A routine call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Bridge Street or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.
Whether you sit by the motor or step away from it hangs on if staying in it is sensible. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. Carrying on does the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult spot, and that is no trouble for us.
Petrol in a diesel, but the car has travelled
Your A1(M) is the road which counts here, and runs under 5 miles from Peterborough. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.
Don't start it to move it. Get off at the first sensible junction then turn off. Long run? Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in the van.
About Peterborough
Peterborough is a city located in the eastern part of England, situated on the River Nene in Cambridgeshire. Peterborough sits at a low elevation of around 13 metres above sea level, near the fenlands and approximately 24 miles from the city of Ely. Peterborough has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly prevalent, and is close to nearby places such as Eastgate, New Fletton, and Woodston. Peterborough is also within commuting distance of London, at around 74 miles away.
What we do when we get to you in Peterborough
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers change what the work actually is.
- Your tank gets cleared of it.
- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that created the issue.
- Our technicians pour new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
- Our technicians turn it on and check it runs properly on new diesel.
The car is then ready for you to pull away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and as everything is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.
A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Peterborough
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas the fault underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits instead.
AdBlue removal around Peterborough has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians handle both.
Peterborough pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain
One figure would not be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank can hold.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.
Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel questions from Peterborough motorists
I'm on a forecourt around Peterborough. Can you drain it here?
Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this gets done. Our engineers work at Valero and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more frequently than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?
You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.
Is the car still with you?
Never turn it back on.
If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people assume.
