Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Phillack

Never start your engine. If the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Phillack and the remainder of Cornwall, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Just one call to us is sufficient: we will show you what happens next. Try this straight away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you do not start it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition remains off too — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so never put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A motor that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Phillack Hill? Hazards on, and leave it there. A difficult place suits us better than a started engine.
  • Our van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning TR27 5, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you phone.
  • Three facts settle the full job: the stuff you poured in, the ballpark measure involved, plus whether it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sat at Hayle since breakfast? The afternoon has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is idle. It was the journey in that pushed diluted diesel through the pump. Call us before you drive it.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Renault Megane, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside Lidl now. Time elapsed is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel sucked by your pump is.

Don't chance it. The trip home from Bucket of Blood is entirely possible, which is exactly the problem — a weakened tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the parts the fuel is supposed to protect. Call us, then let the Dacia Duster stay where it sits.

We purge the fuel lines rather than only clearing your tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already reached your filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop really assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Ford Kuga parked up close to St Felicitas and St Piala, Phillack Parish Church a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us then leave it off.

That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not your engine giving up — and with no warning for it, motors in that position normally get driven a second time before anybody calls. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Citroen C3 now resting by War Memorial. Switch it off and phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Phillack

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the work often kicks off, and where a fair chunk of it finishes. We work on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's consent, so if you're still at Texaco that is generally where this drain gets done.

Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the one spot the mistake ends up spotted. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Worth it. Shifting it four lengths does not merit starting the motor.

Do our engineers cover your corner of Phillack?

These same trips carry us to Copperhouse, Ventonleague, The Towans, Guildford and Foundry besides Phillack, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for most locations in Cornwall, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come. Near the boundary, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Ring us to ask instead of presuming.

This map outlines the patch this page covers. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is ground our engineers work on, and none of it requires your car to come to us.

Broken down on the kerbside in Phillack

Not everybody finds a sensible place to pull in. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge on Parc-an-Dix Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Wait beside the car if it's safe to sit there, yet clear of the vehicle when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However awkward the location, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the M5 matters, over 50 miles away from Phillack. A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they come are typically a loss of power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Take the next junction that's sensible, pull up there, and never start the car to move it. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you phone. It affects what we bring.

Where's Phillack?

Phillack is a small suburban area in Cornwall, situated on the coast at a low elevation of around 10 metres. Phillack lies near several neighbouring communities, including Copperhouse and Ventonleague, and is part of the larger coastal landscape that includes The Towans. Phillack has a population of approximately 2861 people, living in predominantly terraced housing. Phillack is located near the city of Truro, which is 16.7 miles away.

When our technicians arrive with you in Phillack: what we do

  • Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • We empty that tank of the tainted mixture.
  • What is left in the system should not be what started the trouble, so the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • The motor is fired up and checked to be sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Our engineers do all of it wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Phillack is a distinct problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the issue beneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Phillack page. Both are ours to deal with.

Phillack prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what varies it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Phillack

I am on a forecourt in Phillack. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission we work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts far more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more frequently than motorists fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your car still with you?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.

Throughout Cornwall and in Phillack: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
