Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Plas Madoc?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Plas Madoc and the rest of Wrexham. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Contact us before everything else happens, so you'll see what follows after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for several miles. People have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And once started, never depend on it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel performs two tasks: it combusts, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually all it takes to prime that system, which draws this petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Hampton Way? Hazards on, and leave the car there. A tricky place suits us better than a started engine.
  • Keep your location ready before you call. A postcode starting LL14 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between a van arriving and our van circling.
  • What was put in, about how many litres, and also whether the engine has started — these three facts shape the full job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

How many miles you went is what our technicians query, not how long the vehicle has been standing — and here is why. Diesel performs two jobs on its way through an engine: it combusts, and before burning it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a hurried top-up on the trip in, it dawning on you close to eleven, and a diesel Peugeot 308 sitting at Ruabon since quarter past eight means those couple of miles were covered with the pump running on a fluid stripped of a great deal of its protection. Phone us and keep the vehicle just where it is.

Park it overnight. Call us first thing. Nothing about a diesel BMW 5 Series sitting in the car park by Hampden Arms worsens as it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job stays a simple one right up till the moment it gets driven home. The query we arrive with is about the trip there: a cold motor over a short hop is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can get past the rings into the sump.

Nothing gets worse while it waits. Whatever the diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Gardden Wood, it's doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but never drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Hardly ever the problem, the spot. On-street is the commonest spot our engineers work, and a narrow parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near Plas Madoc Leisure and Activity Centre, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can park alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Mercedes A-Class gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a workable one exists, the fuel lines flushed and clean fuel put through the entire circuit — since by now the worst of it is in your lines, not that tank.

Drain it then put new diesel in — that's the tip you'll get, usually from somebody certain, and it's only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Volvo XC60 near Rhiwabon Leisure and Activity Centre and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What happens next is the trouble: your engine at once sucks the petrol left resting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush the system and take the filter off where your vehicle has a working one, which is the difference between the vehicle being put right and the vehicle simply starting.

Can petrol be taken from your diesel on a forecourt?

A good share of the job ends up done at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly begins. Still at Shell? Then that is normally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the site.

No place but a forecourt can it be stopped with your motor still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Accept the assistance. Firing the car for four car lengths? No.

Parts our team serve near Plas Madoc

Being a rural village, Plas Madoc sees a frequent visit, and its neighbours close by go with it on the same trip: Rhosymedre and Aber-nant, Acrefair and Cefn-mawr, Pont Cysyllte.

If yours is not on this list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for nearly all locations around Wrexham, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Close to the border, or somewhere a satnav struggles with? Phone and ask instead of guessing.

The map is the ground the page includes. The car doesn't need to come to us. We operate throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Kerbside stops around Plas Madoc

The chance to pull over somewhere sensible does not fall to everyone. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge on Llangollen Road, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Safe there? Remain beside it. Not safe? Step out and clear of it. Don't start it up to reach a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into your fuel system. Pressing on does the vehicle far more harm than a technician driving out to an inconvenient location, and that is no trouble for us.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where your M53 comes in — under 25 miles away from Plas Madoc. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and never start the car to move it. Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in the van.

Where's Plas Madoc?

Plas Madoc is a village in Wrexham county, situated inland at an elevation of around 140 metres, approximately 5 miles from Wrexham city. Plas Madoc is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing and is located near other communities such as Rhosymedre and Acrefair. Plas Madoc has a population of around 2620 residents, making it a small but distinct community in the area. Plas Madoc is also relatively distant from major cities like London, being around 161 miles away.

Once our engineers arrive with you in Plas Madoc: what we do

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and whether your motor has run.
  • The contaminated mixture is drawn from your tank.
  • We clean the fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what caused the problem.
  • Our technicians put clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • Our technicians fire it up and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted early, and as all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Plas Madoc is a different matter

The issue is not the same, though the first step is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Plas Madoc page. Both are ours to handle.

Plas Madoc costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel questions from Plas Madoc motorists

I'm on a forecourt around Plas Madoc. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done. Our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more often than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Still with your vehicle?

Leave it turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Draining wrongly fuelled cars, Plas Madoc and the rest of Wrexham, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
