Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Playley Green?

Do not turn on the motor. While the fuel is still in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Playley Green and the rest of Gloucestershire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. One ring to us will be sufficient: we shall explain what happens after this. Try it first.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Do not fire it up — and do not rely on it when it runs. This is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel usually just won't run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It's not okay. It's wearing that fuel system while you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: switching it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those components.
  • Do not put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we would rather come to an awkward location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Drury Lane, turn the hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Before you dial, gather your location. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts GL19 3 — that's what determines whether the van arrives or circles.
  • What got in, about how many litres, and also whether the car has started — these three facts decide the whole job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Running it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has forced real volume through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return trip would close to double the figure to no gain. The Nissan Qashqai can wait outside Ledbury perfectly happily. Call from the platform if easier; standing over us while our technicians work isn't necessary.

What our technicians will ask is if the trip there was short and cold, as that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that won't burn can work past the piston rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Dacia Duster standing in the parking area outside The Rose and Crown with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing degrades while it sits, so leave it there overnight and phone first thing.

Why we are firm about not driving on: the pump rests upstream of your injectors, so whatever a worn-out pump loses travels onward with the fuel. Leave the BMW 1 Series by Saint Bartholomew and ring us.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you phone us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it after that. Then call us about the Volkswagen Touran by Redmarley Village Hall, and don't worry that you can't say how full your tank was. Almost nobody can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and we work it out there. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

What takes place next is the issue. The motor at once pulls the petrol still sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, since draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put clean diesel in, somebody sure of themselves will tell you — and that suggestion is only half right, as do it to a diesel Vauxhall Insignia parked up, The Down House say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take your filter off where the car has a working one, and that is the difference between your car being repaired and the vehicle just starting.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on a forecourt?

Plenty of the work starts at the pump, so a large part of it is finished on site. Still at Gulf? Then that is generally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

The forecourt is the single setting the mistake is caught before the motor has fired. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key settle how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car sits.

The attendants will generally offer to wheel the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing. Starting the car just for four car lengths? Never.

Will our technicians cover your part of Playley Green?

Playley Green is a village, so our vans go out to it and to anywhere by it on the same trips: Redmarley DAbitot, The Heath, Lowbands, Hawcross and Cobbs Cross.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all places in Gloucestershire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Ring us and check instead of assuming — boundaries particularly, and anywhere your phone tends to get wrong.

This map outlines the patch this page spans. Every bit of that is territory our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive the car anywhere.

Stranded on the roadside near Playley Green

A chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not fall to everybody. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Pendock Road since you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Sit with the vehicle while it is safe to sit inside, yet out of the car when it isn't. Do not start it up to get to a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the fuel system. We'll bring our van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for your car that is far better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has gone

This is where the M50 counts, under a mile away from Playley Green. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.

What follows when our technicians reach you around Playley Green

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
  • Our engineers drain your tank of the polluted fuel.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that started the issue.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running smoothly.

From that point, you are ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Playley Green is a separate job

The issue isn't the same, though the first step is — never start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Playley Green page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Playley Green?

Honestly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what moves it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and whether our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Playley Green

I am on a forecourt around Playley Green. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. What decides how much work is required is if that blend has been drawn through the system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists expect.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

Waiting next to it?

Never switch your engine on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and let it remain that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
