Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pleckgate

Never start the engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and the motor has not yet run, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, across Pleckgate and the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Phone before anything else starts, and you'll know what happens after that.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it — and do not rely on it when it starts. This is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel usually just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away just fine for a few miles. It is not okay. It's grinding your fuel system as you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it merely hands you a fuller tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We would much rather drive to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Ramsgreave Drive, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Before you call, gather your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting BB1 8 — that is what decides whether our van arrives or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, about how much, and also if the engine has run. These three replies determine the full visit.

Quarter past eight, a hurried fill-up on the trip in, and it dawns on you at about eleven — by which time the diesel Volkswagen Golf has been parked at Ramsgreave & Wilpshire for three hours. Phone us then leave it precisely where it is. The run in is the bit that counts most, since diesel has two tasks on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before it burns it lubricates the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were done with the pump labouring on a fuel that had lost a great deal of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you drove, not how long your car has been standing.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Call us. It's twenty to nine at the gates of St Gabriel's Church of England Primary School, you are late, and the receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in your BMW 3 Series feels like nothing, fuel gets delivered to demand, and a rushed dash needs plenty of it.

Here is what a job in the car park outside Royal Oak typically looks like. Our engineers reach the car, ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three answers determine most of the work. Then the tainted mixture comes out of the tank, your lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable one. Clean diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then we start the engine, confirm it runs properly, and you pull away.

The pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Blackburn Rugby Club, none of that is going on now. Nothing gets worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but don't drive the car home to buy any.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than afterwards. Then give us a call about the Dacia Duster, the diesel one, near QEGS Sports Hall. Do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was — almost nobody can two days into a car, and it's something our technicians check on the spot. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Pleckgate

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A large share of this work gets done at the pump, as that is where it often kicks off. We work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, so if you are still at BP that's generally where the drain gets done.

At the forecourt, this is halted with the engine never fired, and no place else manages that. Our engineers can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

The staff will generally offer to move it away from the pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Pleckgate and the villages near it

The same runs take us to Roe Lee, Lammack, Royshaw Hill, Four Lane Ends and Ramsgreave besides Pleckgate, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for nearly all locations in Lancashire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours. Close to the boundary, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Call us and enquire instead of presuming.

See the map for the area included here. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your car never needs to move to us.

Kerbside stops around Pleckgate

Some people have no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. A routine call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge beside Ramsgreave Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Out of the vehicle when it's not safe to be inside, by it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. Our van coming to a tricky location is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

under 3 miles out of Pleckgate, the local M65 is what counts here. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not restart it to move it. Get off at the first safe junction then switch off. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring differs.

A bit about Pleckgate

Pleckgate is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated approximately 8.5 miles north of Preston, and forms part of the larger urban landscape of the North West. Pleckgate sits at an elevation of around 163 metres, amidst the rolling hills and countryside of the region. Pleckgate is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the typical residential development patterns of the area. Pleckgate is close to nearby places such as Roe Lee, Lammack, and Royshaw Hill, and is home to a population of around 1782 people.

Once our engineers reach you around Pleckgate: what follows

  • Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Our engineers clear the tank of the polluted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that caused the issue.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running correctly.

That leaves it ready to set off. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pleckgate is a separate problem

The fault isn't the same, though the first step is — never start it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Pleckgate has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

Pleckgate pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Pleckgate motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Pleckgate, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a good part of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's permission our engineers work at Prestonway Service Station and the other forecourts around town regularly.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It's fixable far more frequently than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers expect, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.
