Plymouth: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a moment, and not for moving it: your motor remains off. Pause there. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever the vehicle has stopped — and no other factor settles that more than these next few minutes do. What follows is the order from here, anywhere in Plymouth you happen to be.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

Do these first, in this order.

  • Pull the keys out. Even the ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, pulling petrol out of your tank to precisely the parts it harms, so keep the vehicle off wholly.
  • Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Get the car easy to see first — hazard lights on — if there is traffic going past anywhere close to you.
  • By hand, never under the motor: that is how it comes off the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you push, whatever the mileage.
  • Hold on to the receipt: the grade and the rough amount are written on it, and they're what we ask about first.

Still on the move when you realised? Come off the M5 at the next junction if that is where you are, under 50 miles from Plymouth, and stop somewhere sensible rather than pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

The fork in every Plymouth fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this point depends on one answer.

Motor never run at all?

  • Only the tank has petrol in it for now.
  • Normally it's drained and purged right where the vehicle is.
  • Being here is the best case — which is the whole point of stage one.

Engine run, even for a moment?

  • Some petrol has left the tank by now, gone through the fuel filter, and reached the lines.
  • The high-pressure pump as well as the injectors get it on a longer run.
  • The job expands with the mileage — lines rinsed, filter dealt with, sometimes more.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting the pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does. Nothing is damaged by petrol that is just resting in a tank. Move that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Plymouth

Prepare a little, and the van finds you rather than circling.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode starting PL1 1 works best.
  • A road name helps: Guildhall Square, say, or whichever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: tell us the one outside Alfu Supermarket, and it is straightforward.
  • The car. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.
  • What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Plymouth, so tell us which.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — whichever tells us how much.
  • If it has run, how far plus how heavily — and whether it's run at all.
  • Sort who has the car ahead of when our engineers arrive: some hire and company agreements want the owner to approve this work, and that is quicker beforehand.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Email works too if it can wait, with your car parked at home, going nowhere.

The wait for a Plymouth fuel drain, and what to do in it

During the wait, the harm comes from well-meant help — which is why these matter.

  • Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere exposed, get yourself clear of the traffic and wait away from it. If it is safe where it sits, stay with it.
  • No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a couple of yards.
  • No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from the boot — none of it takes that petrol back out.
  • Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond the tank remains put all the same.
  • Not for your radio, not for the windows: the ignition remains off.

Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

  • Fuel, volume, whether it's run: those answers set this job, and that's why we give a quote after them instead of before.
  • Clearing it's how that blend gets taken from your tank.
  • The fuel lines are flushed. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond the tank, and the lines are holding it.
  • Where your car has a usable filter, it is changed; otherwise, cleared.
  • Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.
  • Our technicians fire it up only after fresh diesel has gone in and bled the fuel system, then check that it is running properly.

Till it runs on clean diesel, we stay with it. Lasting damage is very unusual if it has been spotted quickly, so the car can go straight back to normal use.

Back on the road in Plymouth after the fuel drain

  • Nothing special is needed after a start with fresh diesel — usual driving is all.
  • Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over and ring us back.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was done, and so hold on to the paperwork.
  • The handle's colour is not the guide to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
