Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Plymstock? Don't Start It
With your tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet turned over, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Plymstock and the remainder of Devon, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Contact us so our technicians will show you what follows next before you attempt anything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try next
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. People have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And once started, never trust it: your fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition alone as well: flicking it on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort out, and we'd much rather drive to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Underlane, switch those hazards on and keep it there.
- Before you call, work out your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting PL9 9 — that is what decides whether the technician arrives or circles.
- What went in, approximately how much, and also if the engine has run — those three replies decide your whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Quarter past eight, a quick refuel on the drive in, and the penny drops somewhere around eleven — by which time the diesel Dacia Duster has been left outside Plymouth for three hours. Ring us and leave the vehicle exactly where it is. The run in is the thing that matters here, as diesel does two roles on its way through a motor: it burns, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those few miles were driven with the pump working on a liquid that had given up a great deal of the protection it is built around — which is why the thing we ask is how far you travelled, not how long your motor has been parked.
How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Mercedes E-Class will have seemed perfectly usual on the way back from Goosewell Primary Academy — they all do, and that's the trap. Diesel into a petrol motor mostly will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.
Here is what a job in the car park by The Plymstock Inn generally looks like. Our technicians reach your car, ask what got in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three replies determine much of the work. Then the tainted mix comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A3 has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then we fire it up, check it runs correctly, and you drive away.
Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through, and petrol dilutes it. That's the entire process, and it accounts for the usual Burrow Hill call: a diesel Ford Kuga that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when your fuel thins, pressure that should build then stay built starts leaking past tolerances instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built round. No part of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is corrected.
Three things help when you call from near Plymstock Parish Hall: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest location we work, so the place itself is seldom the problem — we'd far rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain your Vauxhall Insignia, change the filter where there is a serviceable one, flush the fuel lines then put clean fuel through the full system, because by this point the worst of that is waiting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank.
At a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel
Forecourts are where the work mostly starts, and where a big part of that ends. If you are still on the forecourt at Asda, that's typically where the drain gets done — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.
At a forecourt, this is halted with the motor never fired, and no place else manages that. Our technicians can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.
The attendants will generally help you push it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.
Coverage around Plymstock
Goosewell, Billacombe, Pomphlett, Staddiscombe, Oreston — every one of them on the runs that carry us out to Plymstock itself, a coastal area.
There are separate pages for nearly all places across Devon, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Contact us and enquire rather than guessing, especially when you're on a boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles with.
Look at the map for the patch included on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers cover, and none of it needs your car to come to us.
Kerbside breakdowns in Plymstock
Not everyone gets a chance to stop anywhere sensible. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Morrish Park as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.
Wait with the vehicle when it's safe to be in it, and out of it if it's not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. However difficult the location, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than driving on.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
The local M5 is the road which counts here, and it runs under 50 miles from Plymstock. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they come are usually a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.
Get off at the next safe exit, turn off, and don't start the car to reposition. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you phone. What we bring differs.

The visit in Plymstock, step by step
- Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers change what the work actually is.
- Out comes the polluted fuel.
- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that created the issue.
- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- After it is turned on, our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Plymstock?
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your motor stays off — while this issue underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
AdBlue removal in Plymstock has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. We deal with both.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Plymstock
We can't put one figure on this page honestly, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much your tank can hold.
- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Petrol in diesel queries from Plymstock motorists
At a petrol station in Plymstock, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done. Often, provided the site consents: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our technicians answer there and then.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. What settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?
Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the car off. Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more commonly than motorists assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
It isn't an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.
Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
There's no need to take it to a main dealer, since we drain and flush the car wherever it is.
Waiting next to it?
Keep it shut off.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let the vehicle remain that way. Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
