Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Polwheveral?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Polwheveral and the rest of Cornwall. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the engine has not yet run and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in. A single call to us will be enough: our technicians will explain what happens next. Do it first.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Don't crank it — and never trust it if it does start. Here is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and pulls away without complaint for a few miles. It is not all right. It is eating into that fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it ignites it lubricates — your high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition off also: switching it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • Never weaken it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Penwartha Close, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a car that never moved.
  • Before you dial, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts TR11 5 — that's what determines whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the car has run. These three replies decide the whole call-out.

Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through your high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the trip back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over that Volkswagen Golf at Penmere while the work happens, and our team would very much rather talk to you tonight than learn on Monday.

We'll come to you, empty your tank, purge the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive home. So if petrol went into your diesel Skoda Octavia in Polwheveral and you are stranded at Argal Farm Shop with a boot packed with shopping, phone us — and don't crank it once more to get out of that space. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses hardly any diesel, so those are often the simple cases.

Twenty to nine. Outside Constantine Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put your hazards on, leave your engine alone, and call us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a dash taken in a hurry demands a great deal of it.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built escapes past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered round. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it flows through — that is the entire process. It accounts for the usual Scott's Wood call too: a diesel Audi A3 that drove out without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that mix goes into your filter, into the lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Mercedes A-Class that made it close to St Constantine wants its circuit cleared. Clearing isn't the same thing.

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Pumps are where the work usually begins, and where a fair portion of that ends. Still at Gulf? Then that is normally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.

At a garage, the mistake gets stopped with your motor never fired, and no place else manages that. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push the vehicle. Very much worth doing. Moving the car four spaces does not merit firing the engine.

Polwheveral plus the places beside it

As a coastal area, Polwheveral sees a frequent call, whilst the places close by come with it on the same journey: Nancenoy and Constantine, Polpenwith and Comfort, Ponjeravah.

Our technicians do come. The names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations in Cornwall, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Call us to enquire instead of assuming — county lines above all, and anywhere the satnav can misread.

The map marks the patch this page covers. The lot is ground our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not bring the car anywhere.

Roadside call-outs in Polwheveral

Not everybody has the chance to pull in somewhere suitable. A common call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge beside Penbothidno or at a lay-by with the hazards on.

Out of the motor if it is not safe to be in it, with it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: restart the car to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. However tricky the place, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the car than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Here is where the M5 comes in — over 50 miles from Polwheveral. A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring alters.

Polwheveral itself

Polwheveral is a coastal locality in Cornwall, situated near the towns of Nancenoy and Constantine, with Polpenwith also nearby. Polwheveral sits at an elevation of around 60 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside and coastline. Polwheveral has a population of approximately 548 people, living in predominantly detached housing. Polwheveral is located about 11.6 miles from Truro, the nearest city, and around 240.2 miles from London.

Once our technicians get to you in Polwheveral: what happens

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
  • Away goes the polluted fuel.
  • Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's left in the fuel system isn't what caused the issue.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Our technicians turn it on and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Polwheveral

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor remains off — while this fault under it is a separate one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Polwheveral page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Polwheveral

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much that tank can hold.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Polwheveral

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Polwheveral?

Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the car off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more commonly than drivers expect.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, since our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Leave the engine switched off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
