Pontnewydd: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Pontnewydd and the rest of Torfaen. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Phone before all else starts, and you will know what follows next.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do first
- Never start the car — and do not believe it if it does start. Here is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel usually just will not run, so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for several miles. It is not okay. It is eating into that fuel system as you drive.
- Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it burns it protects that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is often sufficient to prime your system, which carries this petrol out of your tank and into exactly those parts.
- Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so don't pour diesel on top to water down it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Our team would much rather travel to a tricky location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that hasn't moved. On the verge on William Street, that means hazards on and leave the car.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting NP44 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than arriving.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what got in, approximately how much, and if the car has been run. Those replies settle whatever comes after.
Tonight, please, not Monday. Driving it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has put real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would roughly double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Passat can wait outside Cwmbran perfectly well. Phone from the platform if handier; standing over us while we work is not necessary.
Each start primes that fuel system and sucks more of the blend out of that tank and towards your pump — which is why a motor shuffled twice into a nicer bay has gradually turned into a harder job than one left precisely where it stopped. So where our engineers cannot work beside your diesel Mercedes C-Class, our technicians shift it without firing it. None of that is fuss about a few seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Lidl our technicians visit often, and the fuel is rarely the difficult part: the bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit at the way in settling whether our van gets to you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the vehicle points.
You'll be told to move the car out of that gateway and deal with it later. Do not. On the zig-zags at the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled Dacia Duster running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol past the fuel filter towards your pump. Let them moan. Call us.
The pump sits upstream of your injectors, and so whatever a wearing one loses passes on with the fuel — which is why we are firm about not driving on. Call us, and leave the diesel BMW 5 Series where it's close to St David's RC Church.
The slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not slapdash. Unfamiliar places see most of that for that reason. So: filled up close to Ebenezer Evangelical Church without thinking, in a diesel Ford Kuga you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone spots it, and mileage settles how much petrol gets to your injectors.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
Forecourts are where this work usually begins, and where a fair chunk of that finishes. Still at Texaco? Then that's usually where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the site.
Nowhere but the forecourt can this be spotted with your engine still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key.
Move the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.
Pontnewydd and the towns beside it
These same runs carry us to Northville, Pontrhydyrun, Cwmbran, Lowlands and Forge Hammer as well as Pontnewydd, which is a residential suburb.
Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most locations across Torfaen have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Ring us to enquire instead of presuming — borders especially, and anywhere your phone may get wrong.
That map shows the patch this page includes. The lot is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive your car anywhere.
Broken down on the kerbside in Pontnewydd
The chance to stop somewhere safe doesn't fall to everybody. Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge of St Anne's Close, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not an unusual one.
Clear of the motor if it's not sensible to be in it, beside it when it is. Don't restart it to get to a safer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system. However tricky the spot, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than driving on.
Driven it already? Stop, and see this
The M4 is the one which counts here, and it runs under 5 miles from Pontnewydd. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.
The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring alters.
Pontnewydd itself
Pontnewydd is a suburban area in Torfaen, situated on the banks of the Afon Lwyd river at an elevation of 74 metres. Pontnewydd lies approximately 5 miles north of Newport and is part of the wider Cwmbran urban area. Pontnewydd has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by terraced homes. Pontnewydd is close to nearby communities such as Northville and Pontrhydyrun.
What we do when we reach you in Pontnewydd
- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
- Away flows the tainted mixture.
- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what caused the issue, and so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.
- Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
- The motor is fired up and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
That leaves your car ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Pontnewydd is a separate problem
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this fault beneath it's a distinct one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Pontnewydd page. Both are ours to handle.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Pontnewydd
Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what moves it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank can hold.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.
A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.
Petrol in diesel queries from Pontnewydd motorists
Fuel drains on a Pontnewydd petrol station forecourt
Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.
Still with your car?
Your engine stays off.
Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and parked, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
