Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pool?

Don't fire up your engine. While the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet run, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Pool and the remainder of Cornwall, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Our team shall tell you what the next part is. Ring us — it happens before everything else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run, so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for a few miles. People get that reversed. It is not okay — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition is left off too — switch it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.
  • Do not add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it only leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and we would sooner get to a tricky location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Fore Street, put the hazards on then leave it there.
  • Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts TR15 3 — that is what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what went in, about how many litres, plus if the motor has been turned over. Those replies settle everything that comes after.

The trip in is what sucked thinned diesel through the pump. Standing still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, parked at Camborne all day, rests inert in your tank while it waits. Call us first — before your keys turn.

What we'll want to know is whether the trip there was short and cold, because that is where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and what does not burn can work past the piston rings and into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Peugeot 308 sitting in the parking area at Plume of Feathers carrying a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens while it waits, and so park it overnight and phone in the morning.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to Cornish Diaspora. For a diesel Ford Focus whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, then let it stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get purged and not just your tank cleared.

The narrower petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. Strange locations see most of that for that reason. So: filled up by Pool Methodist Church without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes C-Class you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and distance decides how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle ragged, and your diesel Dacia Duster is parked up close to 18th Century Chimney. The engine isn't packing up — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours typically get driven again before anyone picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Pool

Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where the job mostly begins, and where a large share of it finishes. If you're still on the forecourt at Morrisons, that is normally where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the one location the mistake gets halted. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key decide how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where the car stands.

The attendants will generally happily push the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing. Starting the car just to roll four car lengths is not.

Do our technicians serve your side of Pool?

Those same journeys get us to Penhallick, Illogan Highway, Tuckingmill, Tolskithy and Park Bottom besides Pool, which is a coastal village.

There are separate pages for nearly all places across Cornwall, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from this list means nothing at all about if our technicians come. On the boundary, or somewhere a satnav can't find? Call us and enquire instead of presuming.

The map outlines the ground this page spans. Every bit of that is ground our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not drive the vehicle anywhere.

Stuck on the kerbside in Pool

Not everybody has a chance to pull in anywhere safe. A routine call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, landed by the verge on Station Road or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Fine where you are? Wait beside it. Not safe? Step out and away from it. Never start up your motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to a tricky spot, and that is no bother for us.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

This is where the M5 comes in — over 50 miles from Pool. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't restart it to reposition. Get off at the next sensible exit then switch off. Long run? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it changes what goes in the van.

All about Pool

Pool is a village in Cornwall, situated near the coast and approximately 9.9 miles from Truro. Pool sits at an elevation of around 100 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside. Pool is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its residential nature. Pool is close to nearby places such as Penhallick and Illogan Highway.

When our technicians arrive with you around Pool: what happens

  • Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • Out goes the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that created the trouble.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It's run with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running correctly.

That leaves your car ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and as everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a garage.

Pool AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this issue beneath it is a distinct one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Pool page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Pool

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what changes it:

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. If it isn't pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Pool drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Pool, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave the vehicle off. Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

The motor stays off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
