Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Poolstock? Don't Start It

Don't start the motor. While the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not run, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Poolstock and the remainder of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Phone and our technicians will explain what happens next before you attempt anything else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That's why you never fire it up, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition stays off too — flick it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so do not put diesel on top to water down it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Hardman Street, anywhere — an awkward place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you dial, gather your location. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning WN3 5 — that's what decides whether the van turns up or circles.
  • What was put in, roughly how much, and if the car has run — those three facts decide the whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning drive working on a fluid that had shed a lot of the protection it is made for. Diesel protects that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left sitting outside Wigan North Western till you realise close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a lot, which is why the question our engineers put to you is about miles rather than hours. Ring us. Leave it exactly where it is.

We will come to you, drain that tank, flush the fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Skoda Octavia around Poolstock and you're sat outside Aldi with a boot loaded with shopping, call us — and never fire it up again to exit the bay. A mile or so at gentle throttle pulls little diesel, which is why these tend to be the easy cases.

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then call us. Happy on the way out to Parson's Meadow, sluggish on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Nissan Qashqai drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Our engineers rinse the lines instead of only emptying that tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Audi A4 parked up close to St James' Church a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Call us then leave it off.

Purged, not drained — that is what a diesel Vauxhall Astra which got as far as The Edge needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, and so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the trouble.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A fair part of this job ends up finished at a pump, as that's where it mostly starts. If you are still at the forecourt at Asda, that's normally where this drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

Before the motor has started — a garage is the single setting it ends up spotted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you roll the car. Very much worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Poolstock plus the areas beside it

Poolstock is a residential suburb, so we get out to it and to the areas by it on the usual trips: Worsley Mesnes, Wallgate, Newtown, Wigan and Lower Ince.

Not on that list? It means nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most towns across Greater Manchester have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Call us to check rather than guessing — borders particularly, and anywhere the satnav may struggle with.

The area the page spans sits on the map. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our engineers cover, and none of it asks your car to move to us.

Stuck on the roadside around Poolstock

Not everyone has the chance to pull in somewhere safe. Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge of Carlton Street, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you remain by your car or move clear of it hangs on if sitting in it feels wise. Do not start it up to get to a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into your fuel system. A van heading to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it's far better for your car than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where your Bryn Spur comes in — under 3 miles away from Poolstock. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Never start it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible exit then turn off. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you ring. It changes what our engineers bring.

What our technicians do when we get to you around Poolstock

  • The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
  • The polluted mixture is pulled from that tank.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what started the issue, so the lines get flushed and your filter cleaned.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • Your engine is fired up and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and because everything is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

Poolstock AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — while the issue beneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Poolstock has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Poolstock?

What changes the figure is laid out below, since this job is not one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. If it isn't urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Poolstock

I am on a forecourt in Poolstock. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's permission we work at Tesco and the other forecourts around town regularly.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more often than motorists assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to live with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
