Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Portherras?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Portherras and the rest of Cornwall. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Our engineers can show you what the next move is. Call us — this comes before everything else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never crank it. And once started, do not believe it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it burns it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • We'd sooner drive to an odd location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Boscaswell Downs, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Keep your location ready before you phone. A postcode that starts TR19 7 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between the van turning up and a van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how many litres, and also if your car has run. Those three replies determine the full job.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on a forecourt?

The job starts at the pump, generally. Often enough the work ends at one as well. The drain generally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Trewellard Garage? Given the station's consent, that's a spot our technicians work, and often.

A forecourt is the single setting this gets caught before your engine has started. Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys are what determine that.

Wheel the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Rolling it four bays does not justify firing the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Portherras

Each start primes the fuel system and draws more of that blend out of that tank and towards your pump — which is why a vehicle moved twice into a better space has silently grown into a harder job than one left precisely where it stopped. So where our engineers cannot work alongside the diesel Renault Megane, our engineers roll the vehicle without running it. None of that is fuss about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Co-op Food we visit frequently, and the fuel is rarely the awkward part: that bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height barrier at the entrance determining if a technician can reach you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the vehicle points.

Normal on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that's how that drive to Borlaze Park went, that tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther the Audi A3 went, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, switch off and ring us.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked near Engine House. For a diesel BMW 1 Series whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, and let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just that tank drained.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, clattering: that is a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong. Never restart the car to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, near Chimney or anywhere else.

Somebody sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle and put new diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Peugeot 208 close to St John the Baptist and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there is petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is suck it back through your pump a second time. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The circuit gets rinsed, the filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed motor from one that merely starts.

Portherras plus the areas near it

Portherras is a residential suburb, so we are out to the town and to the areas around it on the same runs: Higher Bojewyan, Pendeen, Higher Boscaswell, Lower Boscaswell and Trewellard.

There are dedicated pages for most towns around Cornwall, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing about if our technicians come. Contact us and check instead of guessing, especially where you are on a boundary or somewhere your satnav gets wrong.

The ground this page includes sits on the map. Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and your vehicle never needs to come to us.

Portherras: stranded where you pulled up

Not everybody gets a decent spot to stop. If you realised after setting off and finished up along the verge on B3306, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a routine call for us rather than an unusual one.

Remain beside your car while it is sensible to sit in it, and clear of it if it's not. Don't fire it up to reach a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the fuel system. However tricky the place, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

over 50 miles from Portherras, the local M5 is what counts now. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What we bring alters.

Portherras itself

Portherras is a small suburban area situated on the coast of Cornwall, with its elevation at around 137 metres providing views out to sea. Portherras is located near several nearby villages, including Higher Bojewyan, Pendeen, and Higher Boscaswell, and is approximately 27.9 miles from the city of Truro. Portherras has a population of around 604 people, predominantly living in terraced housing.

What our technicians do when we arrive with you in Portherras

  • The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Away flows the polluted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that created the trouble.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • Our technicians turn it on and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to pull away. Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Portherras?

The problem is not the same, though the first rule is — do not fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Portherras has its own page with the details — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Portherras

We cannot put one number on this page truthfully, since this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Portherras motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Portherras. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

A good part of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement we attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally all the time.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It's recoverable a lot more regularly than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with the car?

Your engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers expect.
