Petrol in Diesel

Posenhall: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on the motor. If the fuel is still in the tank and the motor has not been started, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Posenhall and the remainder of Shropshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Contact us and our technicians will explain what comes from here before you try any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. This is why you never start it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition stays off too — switch it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for precisely those components.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we would sooner travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Benthall Lane, put your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning TF12 5, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
  • Three details shape the entire job: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark measure involved, plus whether it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A rushed top-up on the drive in. Somewhere around eleven it dawns on you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has sat outside Telford Central for three hours. Phone us and leave it where it sits. What matters is the journey in, because diesel both combusts and — before that — greases the pump and the fuel injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those few miles worked the pump on a fuel stripped of much of its protection, and no quantity of sitting in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the question about miles rather than hours sitting, and hence the request to leave your keys where they are till our engineers get there.

Car parks like the one outside Spar are a place we attend often, and the fuel is rarely the awkward part. That bay is: cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar on the way in that settles if a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. When our engineers cannot work next to your diesel Renault Clio we will roll it without running it — and that is not pedantry about a few seconds of running. Any start primes your fuel system and pulls more of that mix out of your tank and toward your pump, so a vehicle shunted twice into a roomier bay has quietly turned into a worse job than one left exactly where it stopped.

You'll be told to shift the vehicle clear of that gateway and deal with it later. Don't. On the zig-zags by Barrow 1618 CofE Free School, a misfuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime drags more petrol through your filter on to the pump. Let them grumble. Call us.

The narrower petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of careless. New locations see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up near Benthall Hall without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes A-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone notices, and distance decides how much petrol reaches the fuel injectors.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, your idle turned lumpy, and your diesel Peugeot 208 is now resting close to Broseley Pipeworks. That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly rather than your engine giving up — and because there's no warning for it, vehicles in that position typically get driven once more before somebody calls. Do not. Switch it off then call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Posenhall

At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

A large portion of this work gets completed at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly begins. We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that's usually where the drain happens.

The forecourt is the one location it can be halted before your engine has started. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key settle how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where the car is.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the assistance. Shifting the car four bays doesn't warrant cranking it.

Posenhall plus the areas beside it

As a rural hamlet, Posenhall sees a routine visit, and the areas round about come along on the same journey: Benthall and Wyke, Barrow and Broseley, Farley.

There are pages for nearly all towns around Shropshire, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off the list tells you nothing about if our technicians come. On a border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Contact us and enquire rather than presuming.

The area the page includes appears on this map. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory our engineers work on, and none of that requires the vehicle to travel to us.

Stranded on the kerbside somewhere in Posenhall?

Not everyone gets the chance to pull in anywhere safe. Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge of Wyke Lane, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Out of the vehicle if it isn't safe to sit in it, beside it if it is. Never restart the engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the system. A van driving to a difficult place is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 10 miles out of Posenhall, the local M54 is what counts now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you call. It affects what our technicians bring.

About Posenhall

Posenhall is a small hamlet situated on the shores of a lake in Shropshire, with a mix of detached homes and rural landscapes. Posenhall sits at an elevation of 187 metres, surrounded by rolling hills and nearby villages like Benthall and Wyke. Posenhall is located near the city of Wolverhampton, approximately 16 miles away, and is part of the wider West Midlands region. Posenhall has a population of around 501 residents, living in predominantly detached housing.

What follows when we get to you in Posenhall

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses alter what the work really is.
  • The tank gets drained completely.
  • Our technicians rinse your fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is remaining in your system is not what started the trouble.
  • We put new diesel in and bleed the system.
  • Our engineers start it and make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Posenhall is a different problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor remains off — while this fault beneath it's a distinct one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Posenhall page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Posenhall

We can't put one number on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Posenhall drivers

At a petrol station in Posenhall, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with the car?

Don't switch the car on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume.
