Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pott Row? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Pott Row and the remainder of Norfolk. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Ring us before all else happens, and you'll know what comes after that.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never fire it up. Started regardless? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally can't run, and so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for a few miles. Drivers get that reversed. It is not okay — that fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it greases — the injection pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: flicking it on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We would much rather get to a difficult place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Cliffe-En-Howe Road, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode beginning PE32 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, about how many litres, plus whether the car has been run. The answers shape whatever follows.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan parked outside Kings Lynn this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed thinned diesel through the pump was the trip in. Phone us before you head off to fetch the vehicle.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we're actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the phone call our technicians like sounds like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now shut off at Asda.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Roydon Common in that diesel Mercedes E-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the engine to find more of that.

Three things help when you phone from near Pott Row Village Sign: which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, so the location itself is seldom the problem — we'd much rather deal with a tight parking bay than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Vauxhall Insignia, change the filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the full circuit, as by this point the worst of that is resting in the fuel lines rather than in your tank.

What occurs next is the trouble. The engine at once sucks the petrol still sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put new diesel in, someone certain will tell you — and that tip is half right, since do it to a diesel Skoda Superb parked up, All Saints say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush the system and take the filter off where the car has a working one, and that's the difference between your car being put right and your car simply starting.

At the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

The work kicks off at a pump, usually. Often enough the job ends there too. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's normally where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the station.

Before your motor has fired — a garage is the single location the mistake gets halted. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the help. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Will our engineers reach your part of Pott Row?

Pott Row is a rural village, and so our team get out to it and to the areas near it on the same rounds: Roydon, Congham, Grimston, Ashwicken and Bawsey.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and nearly all places around Norfolk have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Near the boundary, or somewhere the satnav struggles with? Phone to enquire instead of presuming.

The patch this page spans appears on the map. The lot is ground our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring your car anywhere.

Pott Row: broken down wherever you parked

Some people have no sensible place to stop whatsoever. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Stave Close as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Fine right there? Stay by it. Not fine? Step out and clear of it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere handier and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. However awkward the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has moved

The A1(M) is the road that matters now, and it sits under 50 miles from Pott Row. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first junction that is safe, pull up there, and do not start the vehicle to move it. It alters what we bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

Pott Row itself

Pott Row is a small village in Norfolk, situated inland at a low elevation of around 16 metres. Pott Row lies near the villages of Roydon, Congham, and Grimston, and is approximately 27 miles from the city of Ely. Pott Row has a population of around 549 people, predominantly living in detached houses.

Once our engineers reach you around Pott Row: what we do

  • The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • Our technicians drain the tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Our technicians clean the fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is left in the system isn't what caused the issue.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • Our engineers start it and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Pott Row is a separate problem

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — do not fire it up — yet this problem is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Pott Row page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Pott Row

One price would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a technician.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Pott Row

At a petrol station around Pott Row, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers visit Esso and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave the car off. Driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more regularly than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, as we drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Still with your vehicle?

Your engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
