Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Preston? Don't Start It
If you have not fired up your engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still in that tank and the engine has not run, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Preston or the remainder of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Our technicians can tell you what your next move is. Contact us — it happens ahead of everything else.
What to do next about petrol in a diesel
- As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you never crank it, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone as well: flicking it on is usually sufficient to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so never put diesel on top to weaken it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on College Road, anywhere — an awkward location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a motor that never moved.
- Keep your position ready before you phone. A postcode starting HA9 8 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
- What went in, approximately how much, and whether the car has run — these three facts decide the entire job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at a forecourt?
Forecourts are where this work usually begins, and where a big chunk of it finishes. If you are still at the forecourt at Esso, that's normally where this drain happens — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.
Before your motor has run — a garage is the one setting this ends up caught. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key.
Push it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Moving the car four lengths doesn't justify starting the engine.
How much fuel your pump has pulled is what we're actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the phone call our engineers want goes like this: diesel Audi A4, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now switched off outside Londis.
You will be advised to shift the vehicle clear of the gateway and deal with it later. Don't. On the zig-zags at Preston Park Primary School, a misfuelled Ford Focus running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime draws more petrol through the filter towards the pump. Let them complain. Phone.
Straightforward job, this one — till someone takes it home. A diesel Mercedes C-Class sitting by The Preston with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so park the car then call us once it's light. Expect a question about that trip there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can work past the piston rings and into the sump.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built bleeds past gaps instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it flows through — that is the entire process. It accounts for the usual Preston Park call too: a diesel Peugeot 3008 that travelled out without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.
What happens next is the issue. The motor at once sucks the petrol left sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put new diesel in, somebody certain will tell you — and that advice is half true, because do it to a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso parked up, Church of the Annunciation say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush your circuit and take your filter off where the car has a serviceable one, and that is the difference between your car being put right and your car only starting.
Service in Preston
The same journeys get us to North Wembley, Wembley Park, Wembley, Kenton and Sudbury as well as Preston, which is a residential suburb.
If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations around Greater London, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours. Contact us and enquire instead of presuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere your satnav may misread.
Check the map for the ground shown here. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers serve, and none of it requires the car to come to us.
Preston: stranded wherever you pulled up
Some drivers find no suitable spot to stop whatsoever. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Warren Close since you realised after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.
Whether you stay with the motor or step away from it rests on if staying nearby is safe. Do not restart your motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into the system. A technician heading to an inconvenient place is no trouble for us, and it's a lot better for the car than pressing on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled
This is where your M1 counts, under 3 miles away from Preston. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.
Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit then turn off. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our engineers bring.
A little about Preston
Preston is a suburban area in northwest London, situated near the River Brent and close to the Grand Union Canal. Preston sits at an elevation of around 39 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Preston is located near several other suburban areas, including North Wembley, Wembley Park, and Wembley, and is approximately 8.5 miles from central London. Preston has a population of around 9641 residents.
What our technicians do when our technicians get to you around Preston
- We find out what went in, how much, and if your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
- Out goes the contaminated fuel.
- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that started the issue.
- Your system gets bled, on new diesel.
- It is started with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running smoothly.
Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and because all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a garage.
A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Preston
Do not fire it up: that first step holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.
AdBlue removal around Preston has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. We deal with both.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Preston
What changes the figure is set out below, as this job isn't one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single number on this page.
- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank can hold.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your car is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.
Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Preston
I am on a forecourt in Preston. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Whether the motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It is fixable a lot more commonly than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It isn't a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a separate fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.
Waiting next to it?
The engine remains off.
If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect.
