Petrol in Diesel

Prestonpans: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not run, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has come to rest in Prestonpans or the remainder of East Lothian, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. We shall explain what your next stage will be. Contact us — that comes before anything else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That is why you never fire it up, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit most people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition stays off as well — switch it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.
  • Never tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it simply hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ayres Wynd, anywhere — a difficult spot for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a motor that never moved.
  • Have your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode beginning EH32 9 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what went in, roughly how many litres, and if your car has been turned over. Those answers determine everything that follows.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Driving it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has put real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return leg would more or less double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can sit at the nearest station perfectly happily. Phone from the platform if simpler; standing over us while our engineers work isn't required.

The awkward part is the bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height bar on the way in that decides whether a van can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at Scotmid, say how much space there is round you and which way round your car is. Those we attend often. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets moved with the engine off, and not out of fuss over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of the mix leaves the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better spot have quietly made a worse job of what was simply a car standing still.

You head off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and made sure it runs smoothly on new diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park by The Railway Tavern, the contaminated fuel comes out of your tank, the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when our engineers reach the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off then call us. Normal on the way out to Coronation Garden, sluggish on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel seeps past the precision parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Peugeot 3008 went, the less of that pressure it held.

The pump waits before the fuel injectors, and so whatever a worn one loses moves on with your fuel — which is why we're direct about not driving on. Ring us, then leave the diesel Mercedes E-Class where it is close to Spanish Civil War Memorial.

Clearing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

It starts at a pump, typically. Regularly it ends there too. Still at Thames? Then that's normally where it takes place. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before your engine has run — the forecourt is the only location the mistake gets halted. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will normally offer to move it away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Prestonpans plus the areas beside it

Those same rounds take us to Preston, Cuthill, Meadowmill Cottages, The Heugh and Dolphingstone along with Prestonpans, which is a coastal town.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and the majority of places across East Lothian have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Guessing is the thing to avoid, particularly on a border or anywhere your satnav struggles. Phone and check.

Look at the map for the ground covered on this page. Your car doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck at the kerbside near Prestonpans

A chance to pull in somewhere safe does not come to everyone. If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Salt Preston Place, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a normal call for us instead of an odd one.

Clear of the car when it isn't sensible to be there, with it if it is. Do not restart it to reach a safer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the system. A technician coming to a tricky location is no problem for us, and it's far better for the car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull in, then read this

Here is where your M8 matters, under 15 miles out of Prestonpans. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are normally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring differs.

All about Prestonpans

Prestonpans is a coastal town in East Lothian, situated on the Firth of Forth, with a population of around 10316 people. Prestonpans has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and the town is close to Edinburgh, being only 7.9 miles away. Prestonpans is relatively flat, with an elevation of just 7 metres above sea level, and is near other communities such as Preston and Cuthill. Prestonpans benefits from its location near the city of Edinburgh, while also having its own distinct character.

Our call-out in Prestonpans, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The polluted fuel comes from that tank.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that caused the issue.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • The engine is started and tested to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Prestonpans

Do not crank it: that first step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself. Petrol thins the diesel and strips the protection your fuel system relies on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Prestonpans has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Prestonpans

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what varies it:

  • This is the main one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank holds.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Prestonpans

At a petrol station in Prestonpans, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Regularly, provided the site agrees: JET, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through your fuel system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the car off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more commonly than drivers fear.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep the car turned off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let the vehicle remain that way. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers assume.
