Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Priestfield

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Priestfield and the rest of West Midlands. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Ring us before all else happens, so you will see what follows next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Never crank it — and never trust it if it fires up. That is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and drives away without complaint for a couple of miles. It's not all right. It is grinding your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition is left off as well — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those components.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to handle, and our team would rather travel to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Ward Street, turn your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
  • Before you call, gather your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning WV2 2 — that's what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what was put in, approximately how much, plus whether the car has been turned over. Your answers settle whatever happens next.

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel on the forecourt?

The job kicks off at a forecourt, typically. Regularly the job wraps up on site too. If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that is typically where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the one location this gets spotted. Our engineers can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Away from the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll the vehicle. Well worth it. Starting the car just for four car lengths? No.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Priestfield

The complicated part is that bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height limit on the way in that settles whether a van can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one outside Morrisons Daily, tell us how much room there's around you and which way round the car is. Those our engineers attend regularly. Should there be no space to work alongside the diesel Volkswagen Passat, it gets rolled with the engine off, and not out of pedantry over a couple of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the blend exits the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better spot have quietly made a harder job of what was merely a car sitting still.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Bilston Church of England Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put your hazards on, leave the engine alone, and phone. You may think three miles is nothing, in your BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a dash taken in a rush asks for a great deal of it.

Simple job, this one — until somebody drives it home. A diesel Mercedes C-Class parked outside The Angel Inn with petrol in your tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so leave it and call us once it is light. Expect a query about the trip there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can work past the piston rings and into the oil.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it passes through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the whole process, and it explains the normal Black Country Millennium Forest call: a diesel Dacia Duster that travelled out there without fuss and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when your fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past gaps instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. None of that is the engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

Seldom the issue, the location. On-street is the most common spot we work, and a cramped parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from near Ettingshall Village Community Activities Partnership Centre, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Peugeot 3008 gets emptied, the filter changed where a usable one exists, your lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the entire circuit — since by now the worst of that is in the lines, not the tank.

Coverage in Priestfield

Priestfield is a residential suburb, and our team head out to it and to the areas near it on the same rounds: Stow Heath, Freezeland, Monmore Green, Millfields and Green Lanes.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and the majority of places across West Midlands have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Guessing is the mistake to resist, particularly on a boundary or anywhere the satnav gets lost. Ring us to enquire.

See the map for the patch shown on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is ground our engineers work on, and none of it needs your vehicle to travel to us.

Stranded by the roadside near Priestfield

Not everybody gets the chance to pull over anywhere sensible. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Bilston Road as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Clear of the motor while it is not sensible to wait inside, by it when it is. Do not start up the engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the fuel system. We'll take our van to an awkward location without any bother, and for the car that is far better than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

This is where your M6 counts, under 5 miles away from Priestfield. A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe exit then turn off. It affects what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.

What follows when we reach you in Priestfield

  • Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and if your motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • Away goes the polluted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that caused the issue.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • Our engineers start the car and make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been noticed quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Priestfield?

The fault is not the same, though the opening step is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

AdBlue removal around Priestfield has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Priestfield

One price wouldn't be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Things we get about petrol in diesel around Priestfield

Fuel drains on a Priestfield petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Regularly, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer on the spot.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more regularly than drivers expect.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Never turn it on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
