Priory: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, don't switch the motor on, even for a moment, to move the car. Pause; leave the car off. Cleared then rinsed, just where it is: that is normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that straightforward rests on the minutes to come far more than on anything else. What follows is the sequence from here, anywhere in Priory you are.

Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Do these first, in this order.

  • Priming the system draws petrol from your tank toward the components it harms, and switching your ignition on can be enough to do that. So the keys come out, and the ignition remains off altogether.
  • Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Hazards on. If you're anywhere near moving traffic, make the car simple to see before you do anything else.
  • The staff will normally help you push it away from the pump. Let them, and move it by hand — never on the motor, even for a few yards.
  • Which fuel, and about how much? The receipt answers both, and that is where our first question starts. Never bin it.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you are on the M5, under 5 miles from Priory, and pull over somewhere safe — not at the services farther on. Step one comes after that.

Every Priory fuel drain starts here: has your engine run?

What happens next rests on one answer, and only one.

Motor not run at all?

  • The petrol is still inside the tank and nowhere else.
  • Usually it is drained and flushed just where your car is.
  • Being here is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of stage one.

If the engine has been run, even briefly:

  • The lines and the fuel filter now carry petrol drawn out of the tank.
  • Your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors get it on a longer run.
  • The further it went, the bigger the job — the fuel lines, the fuel filter, and sometimes more besides.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure pump and the injectors protected as it goes through them. Petrol offers them nothing, and that is why the line is drawn there. A tank of petrol, left alone, damages nothing. As soon as it is pumped, petrol begins wearing whatever moves it.

What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Priory

A little planning is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that circles.

  • Your location: a postcode starting DY1 3 works best.
  • Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that is Maple Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Or the landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, such as the one outside Heron Foods.
  • That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of the car.
  • Which got in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Priory has a page just for that. So say.
  • Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
  • Whether it has run. Then if it has, how far and how hard.
  • The owner may have to approve this work under some hire or company agreements — which is why it is faster to settle whose vehicle it is before we get there.

Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — does the trick as well.

Priory fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Stick to these: kindly meant help causes the damage during the wait.

  • Where your car has stopped settles where you wait. Exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety ahead of your car.
  • Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: no one starts it.
  • None of it gets that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from your boot. So no additives.
  • Clearing it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond that tank remains put all the same.
  • Ignition remains off. Even for your radio or the windows.

The fuel drain, step by step, once the van gets there

  • The quote comes after three queries, not before them — what got in, how much, and if it's run — since those replies decide this job.
  • Then your tank is drained, so the tainted fuel comes out.
  • The lines are flushed. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond that tank, and the fuel lines are holding it.
  • Cleared, or replaced if your car has a workable one: the fuel filter is sorted next.
  • Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.
  • First start on clean diesel. When bleeding is finished, the engine is fired up and our technicians confirm that it runs properly.

We remain until it is running on clean diesel. The car returns to normal use straight away, and permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted early.

Back on the road in Priory after your fuel drain

  • Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — ordinary driving will do.
  • Pull over and call us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • Keep your documents. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • Next time, go by the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
