Prudhoe: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Pause, then leave your motor off — not on, and not for a second to shift it. The next few minutes determine it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun normally comes down to clearing then rinsing, right there. Anywhere you are in Prudhoe, this is how things run from here.
Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off
In this sequence, all before everything else:
- Pull your keys out. Even the ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of the tank to precisely the components it damages, and so keep the vehicle off entirely.
- Topping up with diesel sounds like it dilutes the issue. It doesn't: nothing gets out, and the tank just carries more of the same.
- Hazards on. If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, make the vehicle simple to see before you do anything else.
- By hand, not on the engine: that is how it leaves the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you push, whatever the distance.
- Keep your receipt. It shows which fuel went in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we will ask.
On the Central Motorway East, under 10 miles from Prudhoe, the next exit is the location to leave it; elsewhere, the first safe location to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to stage one.
Every Prudhoe fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?
From this point on, everything comes down to a single answer.
Not run, not even briefly:
- All the petrol sits inside your tank, and only there.
- Normally it is drained and purged right where the car stands.
- Stage one counts for precisely this reason: it's the best position to be in.
If it's been started, even for a moment:
- Some petrol has left your tank by now, passed through the fuel filter, and reached your lines.
- On a longer run it has got to your high-pressure pump as well as your injectors.
- Lines flushed, your filter dealt with, and sometimes more: the job expands as the distance does.
The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump and your injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not. Petrol sitting in a tank harms nothing. The components that shift it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.
Prudhoe, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call
A van that circles versus a technician that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.
- Where you are. A postcode starting NE42 5 is the best place to start.
- The road or the car park. A road name helps — B6395, or wherever you have pulled up.
- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, and so mention the landmark — like the one at The Co-operative Food.
- That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of your car.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Prudhoe page.
- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — whichever gives us how much.
- Whether it has run. Then if it has, how far plus how hard.
- Settle who owns your car before our technicians turn up: some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and doing it quicker beforehand.
Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.
Waiting for a fuel drain in Prudhoe: what to do
Hold to these: well-meant help does the harm during the wait.
- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere exposed, get yourself away from the traffic and wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, stay with it.
- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a couple of yards.
- Something from the boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.
- Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is dangerous — and it still leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Don't try a home-made drain.
- Not for your radio, not for your windows: your ignition remains off.
The fuel drain, step by step, once the van gets there
- Our quote comes after three queries, not before them — what got in, how much, and if it has run — because those answers decide the job.
- Emptying it's how the blend gets taken out of your tank.
- Rinsing your lines comes next, because a vehicle that ran has petrol past that tank, inside your lines themselves.
- Then the filter: swapped where there is a workable one, cleared where there is not.
- The system is primed with clean diesel.
- Our engineers fire it up only after new diesel has gone in and bled the system, then check that it is running correctly.
Only when it's running on new diesel do our technicians go. Long-term damage is very uncommon if it has been caught soon, so the car can go straight back to normal driving.
Back on the road in Prudhoe after the fuel drain
- Drive normally. There is nothing special to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.
- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then call us back.
- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was carried out, and so keep the documents.
- Check the label on the pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
