Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Raby Mere? Don't Start It
If you have not fired up your engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has ended up in Raby Mere or the rest of Merseyside, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before everything else begins, so you'll hear what comes next.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Do not start the vehicle. Turned on all the same? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally can't run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that reversed. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition is left off as well — turn it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.
- Never weaken it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, and we would sooner drive to an awkward place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Blakeley Road, turn the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning CH63 0, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how many litres, plus if the car has run. These three details shape the whole job.
How many miles you went is what our engineers care about, not how long the motor has been parked — and this is why. Diesel has two jobs on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before burning it lubricates its injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a quick refuel on the trip in, it dawning on you somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Passat parked outside Bromborough since quarter past eight shows those few miles were covered with the pump labouring on a fluid robbed of most of its protection. Call us then leave it just where it sits.
If you have put petrol in the diesel BMW 3 Series around Raby Mere and you are now stuck outside The Co-operative Food with a boot packed with shopping, ring us. Do not crank it again to leave that spot. We will come out to you, empty that tank, rinse the fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at easy throttle draws hardly any of it, so those tend to be the straightforward jobs.
Nothing alerts you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. The diesel Ford Focus will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from Brookhurst Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car mostly refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump works without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us roughly how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.
Three answers settle most of the work: what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them when we reach the vehicle in the car park at The Dibbinsdale. Then the contaminated mixture comes out of the tank, the fuel lines are cleaned, and where your Mercedes A-Class has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once new diesel is in and the system primed, our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before you drive away.
Flushed, not cleared — that is what a diesel Skoda Superb which got as far as Wirral Manor House needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into the fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the trouble.
Removing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt
Pumps are where the job mostly begins, and where a big chunk of that finishes. If you're still at the forecourt at Texaco, that is generally where this drain happens — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.
Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the one setting the mistake is caught. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key.
Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the vehicle. Worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths does not merit cranking it.
Coverage in Raby Mere
Brookhurst, Poulton, Bebington, Spital, Bromborough — all of them on our trips that carry us across to Raby Mere too, a residential suburb.
Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and nearly all locations around Merseyside have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Contact us to ask rather than presuming, especially where you are on a boundary or somewhere your phone misreads.
The map outlines the ground this page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is ground we serve, and none of that needs your vehicle to come to us.
Stuck at the roadside in Raby Mere
Some drivers get no sensible spot to stop at all. If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Raby Drive, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a normal call for us rather than an odd one.
Sit by the motor when it's sensible to wait in it, and clear of it when it is not. Do not fire up your motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mixture further into the fuel system. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to a tricky spot, and that's no bother for us.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
The M53 is the one which matters here, and it sits under a mile from Raby Mere. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.
Come off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and never start the vehicle to reposition. It alters what our technicians bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.
Raby Mere itself
Raby Mere is a small suburban area on the Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside, situated near the coast and approximately 6 miles from Liverpool. Raby Mere has a relatively low elevation of 36 metres and is characterised by detached housing. Raby Mere is close to nearby places such as Brookhurst, Poulton, and Bebington, and is part of the larger North West region of England.
When we get to you around Raby Mere: what follows
- Our technicians establish what was put in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
- The tainted fuel comes out of that tank.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the issue.
- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
- The motor is fired up and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught early, lasting damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Raby Mere is a distinct problem
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the fault underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol thins your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Raby Mere page. Both are ours to handle.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Raby Mere?
One figure would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.
Raby Mere motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Raby Mere petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it's where a large part of this work happens. Our technicians work at BP and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. The pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later on.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
Turned off is how it remains.
Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people expect.
