Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rainow?

Do not turn on the engine. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not run, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Rainow and the remainder of Cheshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. A single ring our way is plenty: we will tell you what follows from here. Try that right away.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And having started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition stays off also — switch it on and you usually prime the system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • Do not put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it just leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We'd rather get to a tricky location than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to handle than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Round Meadow, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • The van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning SK10 5, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you call.
  • Three replies determine the entire call-out: the liquid you poured in, the rough measure of it, plus whether it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, and so a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked outside Macclesfield this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed thinned diesel through your pump was the drive in. Call us before you head off to fetch it.

Move it out of that gateway and sort it out later — that's what a passer-by will say, and it is wrong. Parked on the zig-zags outside Rainow Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 308 is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for good manners, it is no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, since priming happens with every start and more petrol goes past your filter toward the pump. Let everyone complain. Call us.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are grinding instead, and the motor gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank fires up and moves off perfectly well. Risk the journey home from The Robin Hood? Don't. Phone then leave the Nissan Qashqai where it sits.

Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Whatever the diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Trinity Garden, it is doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive it home to buy yourself any.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Mercedes C-Class parked close to Holy Trinity scarcely two streets on. Phone us, then leave the vehicle off. A short distance does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence flushing the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank.

Removing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

A fair share of the job is completed at a forecourt, since that's where it mostly begins. If you are still at the forecourt at Shell, that is usually where this drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission.

No place except a forecourt can this be spotted with the motor still unstarted. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Will our technicians cover your corner of Rainow?

Rainow is a village, and our vans head out to the town and to the villages by it on the usual trips: Brookhouse, Ginclough, Kerridge-end, Rainowlow and Calrofold.

Our engineers do come. Those places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations around Cheshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Near the boundary, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Ring us and ask rather than presuming.

See this map for the ground included on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of that is ground we work on, and none of it asks the vehicle to move to us.

Rainow: stuck wherever you pulled up

Some people get no sensible place to pull in whatsoever. Set off, then twigged? Finished up along the verge beside Church Lane, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Remain with the motor when it is sensible to wait in it, yet clear of it if it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Carrying on causes the car far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult spot, and that's no trouble for us.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the Roscoe's Spur counts, under 10 miles away from Rainow. A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they come are normally lost power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

A little about Rainow

Rainow is a village in Cheshire, situated near the River Goyt and surrounded by hills, with an elevation of around 237 metres. Rainow has a mix of old and new housing, but detached homes are the predominant type, and its population is approximately 619 residents. Rainow is located near other small settlements like Brookhouse, Ginclough, and Kerridge-end, and is about 15 miles from Manchester. Rainow sits in a scenic area, with the city of Manchester and its amenities within easy reach.

What our technicians do when we get to you in Rainow

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
  • The tank gets drained completely.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that caused the trouble.
  • We put clean diesel in and bleed the system.
  • It is run with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running smoothly.

After that it is ready to drive away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Rainow?

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — never crank it — but the fault isn't. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Rainow page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Rainow?

What shifts the figure is set out below, as this job isn't one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank can hold.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Rainow

Fuel drains on a Rainow petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a large part of this work takes place. We attend Tesco and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through the system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more commonly than drivers expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate fault and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Your engine stays off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers fear.
