Rastrick: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch the engine on, even for a moment, to move the car. Pause; leave the car off. Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever your vehicle has stopped — and no other factor settles that more than the next few minutes do. Here is the order of things from here, anywhere you are around Rastrick.

Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

First, the following — following this sequence.

  • Pull the keys out. Even your ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of the tank to precisely the parts it harms, and so leave the car alone wholly.
  • Topping up with diesel sounds like it dilutes the issue. It does not: nothing comes out, and your tank simply holds more of the same.
  • Get the vehicle simple to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there's traffic going past anywhere near you.
  • The staff will normally help you roll it away from the pump. Let them, then roll it by hand — not on your engine, even for a few yards.
  • Keep the till receipt. It shows which fuel went in and roughly how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

If you were still on the move when you noticed, pull over somewhere sensible rather than pushing on for the services — on the M62, under a mile from Rastrick, that means the next exit. Stage one comes next.

Every Rastrick fuel drain starts here: has your engine run?

What happens next rests on one answer, and just one.

If it has not once been started:

  • Just that tank has petrol in it for now.
  • The work is a drain and a flush, normally done where your car is.
  • This, here, is the best spot to be in, and the reason stage one matters.

If your motor has been run, even for a moment:

  • Some petrol has left your tank already, passed through the filter, and reached your lines.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors get it on a bigger run.
  • Lines flushed, your filter seen to, occasionally more: this job expands as the mileage does.

The line falls there because diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. A tank of petrol, left alone, hurts nothing. The parts that shift it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Rastrick, step by step

Rastrick, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning HD6 3 is the best place to start.
  • The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Holly Bank Park, or wherever you have stopped.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Aldi, for example — and it's much easier to find.
  • The car. Make, model, and that it is a diesel.
  • Which was put in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, plus Rastrick has a page for it. So tell us.
  • Roughly how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
  • Has it run? If so, say how far it got, and the way it was driven.
  • The owner may have to approve this work under some hire and company agreements — so it is faster to settle whose vehicle it is before our engineers get there.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not time-critical, the car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then will do too.

Waiting for a fuel drain in Rastrick: what to do

The wait is where kindly meant help does the damage. Stick to these.

  • Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself clear of the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it stands, wait with it.
  • Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.
  • Something from the boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is hazardous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Don't drain it yourself.
  • Even the radio or your windows aren't worth turning the ignition on for.

When our van gets there: your fuel drain, step by step

  • Three questions. What was put in, how much, and whether it has run. The answers set the job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.
  • Then that tank is cleared, and the polluted fuel comes out.
  • If it ran, the fuel lines are holding petrol that has moved beyond your tank — so they're flushed.
  • Then your filter: swapped where there is a serviceable one, cleared where there's not.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel system is primed.
  • Starting the car. After the system is primed with fresh diesel, our technicians start the engine and make sure it runs properly.

Till it runs on new diesel, our technicians remain with it. It is very rare for a car caught early to be left with long-term damage, and normal use resumes right away.

Rastrick, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do after it has been started on clean fuel.
  • Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • Keep the documents. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
  • The handle's colour is not the guide to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
