Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ravernet

With that tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet turned over, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Ravernet and the rest of County Down, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Our team can tell you what the next step will be. Ring us — this comes before everything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Never start the car — and don't rely on it when it does start. Here is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just won't run, so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and drives off just fine for a couple of miles. It is not okay. It's grinding your fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of that tank then into precisely those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we would much rather drive to an odd place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Heugh Road, turn your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
  • Get your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode starting BT26 6 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, roughly how many litres, and if the car has run. Those three details decide the whole job.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the work mostly starts, and where a big chunk of it finishes. We work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission, so if you are still at the nearest petrol station that is generally where this drain happens.

At a forecourt, it gets stopped with the motor never run, and nowhere else manages it. The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where the car sits.

The attendants will generally happily move the car out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. That's worth doing. Firing it just for four car lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Ravernet

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside the local shops now. Time gone by isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by your pump is.

Out there fine, back sluggish. If that was the run to the green space at the edge of the village, look at your tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the tight clearances supposed to build injection pressure — so every further mile your diesel Nissan Qashqai covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, ring us.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked by the centre. For a diesel Audi A3 whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Call us, and let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get rinsed and not just your tank cleared.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a ragged idle, knocking: that's a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what's wrong. Don't restart it to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, near a street just off the centre or anywhere else.

Purged, not emptied — that is what a diesel Renault Captur which got as far as the far end of the built-up part needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with that tank, and so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

Ravernet and the towns beside it

Hillsborough, Lambeg, Drumlough, Keshbridge, Annahilt — every one of those on our trips that bring us across to Ravernet too, a small village.

Our engineers still come. Those names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations across County Down, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Near the border, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Call us and ask instead of assuming.

The ground this page covers appears on this map. The car doesn't need to travel to us. We operate throughout every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside breakdowns around Ravernet

Not everybody has the chance to pull in somewhere suitable. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Dunskey Street because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it's the normal kind.

Whether you stay by the car or stand clear of it turns on if sitting in it looks safe. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. Our van driving to a difficult spot is no bother for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than driving on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where your M77 comes in, over 50 miles from Ravernet. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't start it to move it. Come off at the first safe exit and turn off. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

Where's Ravernet?

Ravernet is a small locality in County Down, situated inland near the city of Lisburn. Ravernet has a relatively low elevation of 96 metres and is characterised by detached housing. Ravernet is close to several nearby places, including Hillsborough, Lambeg, and Drumlough, and is about 3 miles from Lisburn. Ravernet is a residential area with a population of around 618 people.

What follows when we reach you in Ravernet

  • We check what was put in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • We empty the tank of the tainted mixture.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the issue, so the lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • We turn it on and check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and because everything is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Ravernet?

Don't crank it: that opening step applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal in Ravernet has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. We cover both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Ravernet

Frankly, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what moves it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. If it is not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Ravernet motorists

Fuel drains on a Ravernet petrol station forecourt

A large portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Our engineers work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more commonly than people fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

Waiting next to it?

Keep it turned off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists assume.
